My poor little guppy was looking more than a little pregnant the other day and seemed to be strugging a bit. I separated her out so I could keep a closer eye on her and so the other fish wouldn't bug her. Yesterday I saw that she was continuing to rub her belly against things, so I thought she was either really close to giving birth or having some difficulties. This morning she was still alive and no babies, so I gave her some food hoping it would help her. She wouldn't touch it. Around noon I noticed the troublesome stringy white poop coming out of her, but I also saw some definite baby movement inside, so I didn't want to interfere. I shut off her lights thinking it would help. Around dinner time, still no fry and she was looking lethargic. I tried to reach in to help her a little, but she got freaked, so I just let nature take its course. An hour ago I literally watched her die. As soon as I was sure she was gone, I tried to squeeze on her belly, hoping that since she just died I could at least rescue some of the fry. About a dozen fry popped out...all fully formed and obviously ready to be born, and all dead :(. I am so depressed. I keep wondering if there was something I could have done to save her or the fry or both.

The trouble is that I think she was just too little to give birth. She was about 3 or 4 months old. A whole bunch of her sisters who were born at the same time she was, are also beginning to look pregnant...although probably a week or so behind where she was. I don't want to lose all of them. Is there anything I can do to help them? They are just so small, and I think the babies are just killing them :(.

:-(

Sorry to hear your news :( Its always sad when fish die but even more so when pregnant fish die.

As for rescuing the fry, there was probably nothing you could have done. I have read that the birthing process is essential to the fry surviving so by squeezing them out the fry would have been dead anyway. Of course in your case it was worth a try since the mother fish was allready dead :(

As for your other fish, keep the environment as stress free as possible. Possible even let them give birth in the tank they are in.....

Let us know how they go

i would agree with angry_platy jus let them be. if they die they die. i wouldnt think there is really any thing you could do at the moment. maybe add some stress coat when they start to give birth. but you may want to ask some one with more experiance about the stess coat.

i am really sry to hear :(
