Hi all,

I used to have a fish tank about 5 years ago and really enjoyed it but gave it up when I moved house. I decided to get a tank a few weeks ago thinking it would all come back to me.. but it hasn't!! I also decided to get 2 Dwarf frogs which although they are sweet I have no idea how to look after and my LFS wasn't very helpful. Right now in the 90l tank I only have 4 tetras and 2 frogs (as it has had a week cycle and I am beginning to introduce the fish slowly). So here are my questions... if anyone could help that would be fantastic!!

1. How often do you actually feed fish?? I have read (and heard) different versions from 3 times a day to 3 times a week and am confused!!
2. What do aquatic frogs eat?? When I bought them my LFS assured me fish flakes were fine but it has been 3 days and I haven't seen my frogs eat yet and every site I look on tells me they need bloodworms!
3. The day I got the frogs they were very active but for the past 2 days have just sat behind the heater in the tank and one of them I can't actually find but given that the area around the tank is frog free I assume he's in there somewhere.. is this normal?? (my tank is 77-79 degrees in the corner furthest from the heater so I don't think the water is too cold for them)
4. When is the right time to get bottom-feeders? Do you have to wait until the tank matures or can they live off fallen food??

I think that's it for now.. I will buy a book at the weekend but unfortunately all the shops around me close before I finish work (which is a problem as I can't get hold of bloodworms for the frogs or a book until Saturday!)

Many Thanks :good:

Gemma

depending on filtration the feeding can vary, in my bior i feed them once every other day, but in my 52 gall i feed them every day but on the 7th day i dont feed them. a good varyed diet is best, vary it with live/frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and diaphrana (i cant spell it!! , someone please corect it.) some pellets are good for middle/bottom feeders and flakes for top feeders fast sinking tablets are what i feed my corys. only feed what your fish can eat fully in 2 mins, however tablets i leave in for 5 mins because the corys take a bit of time to eat it. the tablets i feed one every 2days.
i added bottom feeders on week 6 (2 weeks after my fishless cycle) and they are scavengers some they will eat any remainding food on the floor hense "scavengers" and they enjoy graising on the bogwood.

bloodworms are a key part of a balenced diet, your fish should last untill the weekend but they can easily be ordered online.

hope this helps, shang hi :good:

Hi Gemma, are you sure that your tank has cycled? It may have but a week doesn't seem long enough to me, can i ask what you did to cycle the tank?

As for feeding, i highly doubt the Dwarf frogs will eat flake, (are you sure they are Dwarf Frogs and not clawed frogs?) they will need to be fed either bloodworms, brine shrimp or daphnia as shang hi stated. The fish will also benefit from being supplemented with these foods.

the frogs will generally hide most of the time until they are comfortable with their surroundings, however i think you should get the water tested becasue if the tank is not fully cycled, the frogs and fish may be suffering.

try visiting www.allaboutfrogs.org. You can find lots of info about african dwarf frog care there. Click on where it says frequently asked questions. Then go to care sheets. They like sinking food.

I have just realised (after researching online) that my tank hasn't cycled.. My LFS said that I had to leave it without fish for a week and add some bacteria he gave me and then I could begin adding them.

I realise now that this was not the way to do it but didn't think to do any research as I asked all the questions I wanted when I bought the tank... guess they just don't know what they're talking about.

As for the frogs... I was assured (and really hope) that they are Dwarf frogs. I'm getting really worried about them as they look like they're quite thin and still have not eaten. I managed to get hold of some dried bloodworms as I wont be able to get to a proper fish shop until the weekend but they did not sink and my frogs still have not eaten!!

Is there anything I can do about the fact that my tank haven't cycled as the frogs/fish are already in it?!?

Thanks for your answers!

I managed to get hold of some frozen blood worms.. my skinny frogs now have round bellies.. am so pleased!!
