I called home yesterday only to be told that Big Meanie has passed away. :-(

People who dont have fish as pets say how can you become so attached to something you can't pet or hold. But if ever there was a fish with character it was Big Meanie. He survived all my stupid mistakes as new fishkeeper. He lived through the cycle and was in the first batch of fish i ever put in my tank. Plagued with a strange spinal curvature his whole life, Big Meanie was the liveliest fish in the tank all the way to the end. He swam around as if he had no disability, in that normal crackhead danio way. He enjoyed chasing the other fish around (in a playful way, not attacking them) Whenever i put my hand in the tank he would come up and try to bite it. Whenever i put new fish in he would swim right up to the bag when it was floating to great his new tankmates. He died about two weeks after i left for college, just days after his first birthday.

Some may say it was from his spine problem, but it never seemed to slow him down any, i think he died of a broken heart cause he missed me. :-(

R.I.P. Big meany, you will be missed.

Aww he seemed like such a sweet fish from your description. I love fish like that who have a lot of personality, even if they do have little quirks. :rip: little :fish:

One question though... why would you buy a fish that has an obvious spine deformity?

David - well, big meanie's infliction, while present from the time i got him, was progressive. In the beginning it was not exactly obvious, and like i said i was a beginner and didnt select any particular fish at the store, the guy just put them in a bag. Upon further inspection at home i noticed his strange shape.
