Where my hubby works, they have a fish tank in the canteen and its looked after by one of the airmen(RAF).
Anyways, hubby came home on tuesday and said the plec had died suddenly. So i gave him some of my trumpet snails as he didnt want another plec. He came home that night and said that two were dead as soon as they hit the bottom.
I said to him to get a cup of water so i could test it as the snails are really hardy and there must be something wrong with the water.
Yesterday he brought the water home and i put some into a test tube for an ammonia reading and it was teaming with planaria. The ammonia and nitrite read 0 but the nitrate was around 500. Yes, 500.
GH read 14 and the kh read 0. The ph is at 5 but probably slightly lower as my test didnt go lower than that.
I questioned hubby a bit further and he said he hadnt seen anyone clean it out for weeks and weeks and certainly not the filter, ever. Yup EVER. The tank has been there for around 4 years.
Was i mad, those poor fish!!
Bob (hubby) also said that all the cardinals had died and other fish he didnt know. All thats left are a pair of moonlight gouramis and a female krib and some others he doesnt recognise.
I said to bring them to me or they are going to die.
Apparently he cant just *liberate* them as his boss wants to talk to the bloke *looking after* them.
Apparently the tank and fish are going to go soon anyway but the blokey gets first dabs at taking the fish and the tank. He has to pay for them but i dont see the logic of letting him have them as he didnt give a rats arse about them in the first place.
Bob came home at dinner and im there wanting to know whats happening. He said the boss has still to speak to the bloke but if nothings sorted today, they have to go through another weekend of swimming in acid.
The tank is around 3 foot long and Bob offered to pay £30 for the whole set up, but the bloke looking after them has a tank at home as well and i dread to think what will happen to them if he gets to take them as putting them straight into a normal set up will no doubt kill them.
Its all so sad, poor fishies.
I'm praying that Bob gets to bring them home today so i can slowly acclimatise them to the tanks i have.
