Where my hubby works, they have a fish tank in the canteen and its looked after by one of the airmen(RAF).
Anyways, hubby came home on tuesday and said the plec had died suddenly. So i gave him some of my trumpet snails as he didnt want another plec. He came home that night and said that two were dead as soon as they hit the bottom.

I said to him to get a cup of water so i could test it as the snails are really hardy and there must be something wrong with the water.
Yesterday he brought the water home and i put some into a test tube for an ammonia reading and it was teaming with planaria. The ammonia and nitrite read 0 but the nitrate was around 500. Yes, 500.
GH read 14 and the kh read 0. The ph is at 5 but probably slightly lower as my test didnt go lower than that.
I questioned hubby a bit further and he said he hadnt seen anyone clean it out for weeks and weeks and certainly not the filter, ever. Yup EVER. The tank has been there for around 4 years.
Was i mad, those poor fish!!
Bob (hubby) also said that all the cardinals had died and other fish he didnt know. All thats left are a pair of moonlight gouramis and a female krib and some others he doesnt recognise.
I said to bring them to me or they are going to die.
Apparently he cant just *liberate* them as his boss wants to talk to the bloke *looking after* them.
Apparently the tank and fish are going to go soon anyway but the blokey gets first dabs at taking the fish and the tank. He has to pay for them but i dont see the logic of letting him have them as he didnt give a rats arse about them in the first place.
Bob came home at dinner and im there wanting to know whats happening. He said the boss has still to speak to the bloke but if nothings sorted today, they have to go through another weekend of swimming in acid.
The tank is around 3 foot long and Bob offered to pay £30 for the whole set up, but the bloke looking after them has a tank at home as well and i dread to think what will happen to them if he gets to take them as putting them straight into a normal set up will no doubt kill them.
Its all so sad, poor fishies. :-(
I'm praying that Bob gets to bring them home today so i can slowly acclimatise them to the tanks i have.

*bood boiling* Why should some jackass that didn't take care of them
in the first place, get dibs? Especially when you are offering $ and
have the expertise?
It just makes me so mad that supposedly smart people (like your hubby's
boss, and I'm not saying he's actually stupid, just ignorant) have
NO FRICKIN COMMON SENSE!!!! Keep us posted.
**Good luck lil' fishies**

He came home and i'm in his ear about the fish. I think he's regretting telling me about them now.
Anyways, it turns out the other guy wasnt at work today so the boss isnt going to do anything more until Monday.
Bob says theres nothing more he can do as he has told his boss whats happening and he even took in the test kits to show him where the tanks are now and what they should be.
He tested the tap water and that is just above 6.

Will just have to wait and see, but Bob doesnt think they will do anything and just leave the fish until theres none left. At best he brings them home to me and at worst they die in the tank or the other bloke gets to take them home.

I'm not giving up though, and will be moaning and whinging until something gets sorted. :flex:

This is horrible. Can't Bob's boss understand that if 'Blokey' did not look after the fish before, he should not be given the opportunity to look after them now?

And am I alone in cynically thinking that maybe Blokey has let the tanks become unsightly and toxic so that he can get them for next to nothing?

But whether his actions stem from ignorance or wilful neglect, he is clearly not fit to look after them whether at work or at home.

Please keep us posted.

Good for you Black Angel, I hope you get them and bring them into normality.
By the way, where are you based? We are in the RAF at Waddington.
We might even bump into each other one day on our travels.

Hi Dawney we're in sunny Lossiemouth.. B)

Hubby has gone away and wont be back at work until Tuesday now. The other guy has a tank at home so thats why he wanted to do this and it looks good on his assessments. I hope he cares for his own fish better than the ones at work.
If i could get on and sneak in to free them i wouldve done but i would have some explaining to do at the main gate with a bucket of fish lol.

WAG > I have nearly fallen out with him trying to get him to see what a ridiculous thing it is to let him take the fish away but its up to the boss now and the boss doesnt seem that fussed, especially when he said they were just fish. Hopefully the other guy wont want them, but as youve said he might want the tank as they will be practically giving it away.

Will let you know how it goes through the week. :)

Updated to say that Hubby cant see the fish any more. Either they all died or the bloke looking after them took them home. :byebye:
