I'm finally moving over to the salt side. :hyper: It feels strange, I've wanted to have a saltwater tank for so long now, actually having one in the near future seems like a dream. Just my pessimistic side getting the better of me, I suppose.

Anyway, I'm just double checking to make sure I'm not forgetting anything before I order it. If you know of anything better and similarly priced please do tell.

Here it is:

Already own:
1x 29g tank (30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 18 3/4)
1x Stand

Ordering from drsfostorsmith.com :
1x
Jager 100 watt heater
1x Digital thermometer
2x
Maxi-jet powerhead model 900 (230 gph)
1x Maxi-Jet Powerhead/Pump Model 400 (106 gph) (for salt mixing)
1x Mag-float
1x IO salt, 50g bucket
1x Refractometer
2x Timers for lighting, using one for freshwater tank.
2x Aragamax sand 30lb (I'm not sure how much I will need for my tank so I just bought two. :p )
1x Visi-jet skimmer (until I upgrade to the AquaC remora, until then some skimming is better than no skimming.)
1x API master test kit

Ordering from thefilterguys.biz
1x
OCEAN WAVE FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI

Ordering from petmountain.com
1x dual sattelite 24-hour light system

I'm going to order live-rock with the money I have left, but I don't know from where. Suggestions are appreciated!

Just a few thoughts.
When I started, I ended up buying almost the EXACT same things.
The light is okay, it's the same one. Keep in mind you won't be able to have SPS or 'nems or anything like that, but softies will do fine.
I'm considering upgrading to the new Current 4x24w T5's with individual reflectors, just for more selection.

I got a seio m620 instead of MJ's, because they are slightly more energy efficient and the flow is more widespread. I use an MJ for surface agitation.

You'll need two timers just for the SW light, each bulb has a seperate cord.
I think it might be cheaper buying it from Foster+smith, too, because of the shipping costs.

For liverock, premium aquatics is where I got mine from.
How much were you planning on getting, or what sort of aquascape?

I'll bump the timers up to three, then. I'll also look into the seios.

I was planning to get about 30lbs of rock. I want to have a pile on one side of the tanks and have it slope down to an open area, if that makes sense.

yeah, use a seio, tunze, or hydor koralia for pumps, and dont get the visi-jet.

I guess I can do without skimming for a few months until I can buy a Remora.

How much sand will I need for a shallow bed? I'd like to go with a DSB but from what I've read in books they're not effective in tanks under 55g.

It's just you need them to be pretty deep to be effective and a 29g is only 18" high. If you get 30 pounds it would probably be about 1/2 an inch.

In a tank that small I would try and dump the laminar flow maxijets and the somewhat bulky Seios for either Tunze nanos or the Hydro Koralia range. Much easier to place those puppies.

A FOWLR only needs about 10x to work fine, so that will be more than enough. You don't need quite so much flow with better movement styles anyway. The 10x/20x/40x system is based on laminar flows where you needed huge flows to make sure the areas of the tank not in a direct flow are still moved about. Once you move wider streams of water the flow rates doesn't have to be quite so high.

It would be a good idea to but both for when I upgrade to reef, I suppose.

My final costs(unless someone points something out:

Supplies: 342$
RO/DI: 135$
Total: 479$ + shipping = a little over 500$. I'm going to have to wait another month or two before I can get rock, but at least I'm half-way there!

I've had a few bad experiences on ebay. If you know of any trustworthy dealers I'd be happy to check them out, if a little suspicious. :good:

dont forget to try pricing out the items at marinedepot.com as they're sometimes more affordable.

I would reccomend 30lbs of sand MAX. A 29g has a very small footprint and won't need much sand at all. Heck, I've only got 20lbs of sand in my 65g...
