Hi

whenever i buy new live plants for my tank within 4-5 days i get an influx of snails. is there a way to get rid of them before they infest my tank and my hands
go all wrinkly from taking them out,i'm not kidding i took out like 23 the other day only in an hour to see 10 more in there..

i am asking as i need 3-4 new plants in my tank as the other ones died any ideas?

You'll only have a problem with a snail population if there is food for them to consume, and that means uneaten food and detritus on the substrate, snails are great in tanks, as long as you don't over feed and your substrate remains clean you should have no issues with them.

I only put in what my fish will eat i have 2 bronze cories so maybe some of the pellets don't get eaten as i feed them at night its hard to say for sure..
i always give my plants a really good rinse and soak before hand too someone suggested some peroxide? to wipe over the plants first then wash/rinse them
i have tried the half potato trick but as i also have an apple snail it doesn't work so great..

Another method you can use to help remove the snails that are already in the tank is after you turn the lights off for the night put a piece of lettuce into the tank. In the morning before you turn the lights on remove the piece of lettuce which will have snails on it. You might have to repeat this a few times, but it is easier than trying to move them individually by hand ;)

Well this is a little trick my friend taught me which has worked for me perfectly, add a piece of lettuce on the top of your tank, check the next day and the snails will be on the lettuce, this is a very easy way to take them out of the tank.

Really you should never add fish to solve problems like snails or algae (or poo for that matter), especially not fish like clown loach, which need to be in shoals of 6+ and can grow to a foot long.
