Snails

What kind of snails do you want? I guess it really dosn't matter much, I'm just curious. And yes you can put snails in with tetra's. The snails will eat the left over food on the substrate and any where else, they will be fine. I do however recommend feeding them cucumbers once in a while, it's just good for them. You will however need to wiegh the cucumbers down as the do float.

Be careful not to overfeed your fish as snails can multiply like crazy, especially when there is too much food. You can become over run in a matter of a couple weeks. Take it from some one who has been there before.

Well that really depends on what kind of snails you have. There are two kinds of snails ones that are A-sexual and ones that are not. A-sexual snails such as pond snails for example will multiple rapidly because it only takes one to reproduce. Snails that are not A-sexual such as mystery snails for example will not multiply rapidly. It take two mating mystery snail to reproduce and they lay eggs out of water.

Radioman what kind of snails are you planning on getting for your tank?

the pond snail will breed like mad and when i mean mad i mean mad. i had a apple snail withe terras ant they got along perfecly well. if you want to breed apple snails, you want to get about 5 because its hard to tell if one is male or female. as the pond snail will breed with just one.

oh yeah apple snails normally hid in there shells in the morning than at night they speed around. if you want to watch them earlier you just switch the light off. normally in the morning when i go to switch the light on you will see him/her.

i only had one but if you have more it will be better. if the fish eat all the food they will eat old leaves or little bit of a new one off live plants. they eat flake food and plants. also clean the tank

they don't eat meat e.g worms, brimpshrimp and et

I may be wrong but I was under the impression they were hermaphrodites, meaning they carry both sets of sexual equipment meaning they can fertilize another snail and become fertilized, therefore 2 snails would be required.

You are for the most part correct CruX. Although there is in fact A-sexual snails out there meaning they reproduce by them selves.

I was under the impression that a mystery snail was one that came in a plant and you dont know what it is?

Or is a mystery snail an actual name of snail species?

Stupid question i know

That is a very good question DanielG I was wondering that myself!

no, mystery snail are the common name for a particular species, and are not considered pests (AFAIK). Snails that you get in plants from the lfs are usually small and brown and pests.
There are no stupid questions!!!!! ( well, maybe there are, but you didn't ask one!)

ok well i ll have to change my signaure then!

the snails in my tank are unknown from the lfs should i take them out is they are pests?

not sure how they are surviving anyway the tank is cycling and has ammonia 5ppm and nitrite 2ppm

You're right. Mystery snails/apple snails aren't pests. Most people add them to clean up uneaten food. Just keep one and you won't have trouble. They get to a good size, so one is typically plenty.

Nerite and apple snails (sold with the common name of mystery snails) are also safe to add. 1 apple will not reproduce. You can keep as many nerites as you want. The nerites will lay white eggs around the tank, but the eggs only hatch in salt water.

Pond snails, malaysian trumpet snails, and some ramshorn snails are the pest snails.
