:/ I just purchased a couple of live aquarium plants and found a few snails crawling on it. I transported the plants into my 2 gallon tank, because my larger tank isn't set up yet and I plan to put them in when the tank is prepared. I'm not sure if snails are good or bad for a tank with live plants. Will the snails consume my aquarium plants?

Also, when I was dumping out the water the plants were in I noticed a few strange insects swimming around. I have no idea what they are and what to do with them. These aquatic insects have long green bodies with a pair of legs that propel them forward. They resemble some type of larve. I see them cling onto a fern-type plant leaf and I don't have the slightest clue of their identity. If anyone has any suggestions about snails or these strange water insects, I would appreciate some advice.

hmm.. The snails should not be a problem and more than likely wont eat your plants ,they will be ok as long as they dont bother you and they keep there population down.

As for Insects! Holy Crap I've never heard of someone having insect problems

Did you feed your fish live larve of some kind?

Maybe a misquito like insect layed eggs in your tank..?

I fed my fish frozen food, but the plants were just bought at a pet store. They spent all time in a plastic bag and when I poured the water into a large bowl, I noticed them paddling around. Any ideas of their appearence or species? I'll keep the insects in a platic tube for further examination.

Snails can be a problem IF you don't have something to eat them. Loaches and Cichlids love to eat them. In fact I just set up my Fancy Tailed Feeder Guppy tank with Snails. When I get a handful of them I will toss them in with my Oscar. Munch, Crunch, Lunch!!!
As for the insects....if you have any fish that is big enough to eat them they will never bother you again. I love throwing a grasshopper, cricket, water bug...whatever I can find in my Oscars thank. He thinks it is Christmas all year.

I have 7 guppies in my 29 gallon tank, but I never knew they could eat snails. I'm maybe planning to get a few Clown Loaches, if they're good companions with Gouramis. Or I might just keep them in my little 2 gallon tank with a few inexpensive plants as a snail tank.
