Ok, I am ready to expand my aquarium..

Right now, I have

2 dwarf gouramis
1 long finned danio
5 assorted mollies
3 guppies

44 US Gallon tank.. gravel bottom

What else could I put in there ? maybe to help keep the bottom clean? or just down right interesting, but wont break the budget ?

Shrimp? Snails? Or maybe something pretty like an angelfish? How mean are they? I've heard they aren't "peaceful" ...

I dont want snails to take over my aquarium, but they are pretty cool, can you get just 1 ?

thanks :) taking a trip to the LFS tonight, would really like some input , 'cause I have too much trouble making decisions when I see all the fish lol

You could get a school of danios, rams,Bristlenose or otto's,A school of glowlights might be nice :D
Yes you can get one snail.

3 more danios and 4 corys like albino, peppered, panda or bronze corys for example i think would be good- or you could have some ghost or amoured shrimp or some large snails like apple or giant ramshorn snails :)

the catfish type wont mind my gravel bottom?

thats one thing I was concerned with about them... And 1 snail would be ok? it wont be pregnant when I get it or anything? lol :)

please forgive all the questions.. better to ask here than LFS :)

Well, i have corys right now, and i have a gravel bottom. They really don't seem to mind :D

You really might want to consider getting more Danios. They are a schooling fish that needs to be in a group of 6 or more. They like each others company. Keep in mind, cories are the same. They like groups of 4 or more.

I have 7 Danios and 5 cories among others in my tank

Good Luck B)

a snail and some shrimp(ghost shrimp anyway not sure bout the other kinds) will be ok. i would suggest getting atleast 4 more danios. then maybe some corries, about 4. mine does just fine with gravel never had anyway probs with it. the angel fish might be tricky. from my experience danios and gouramis will sometimes nip at the angel(long wavy fins). sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.

other suggestions:
platies
swords
neon
black neon
glo light
harliquins
glass fish
wcmn
smaller plecs(bristle nose, rubber lipped etc)
ottos
tiger barbs might work out
cherry barbs

all are shoaling(need atleast 5 of thier kind) except the platies and the swords which should be kept at a 1 male to 2-3 female ratio

thanks all, I decided to hold off and go tomorrow so I dont get too crazy and impulse it LOL :) thank you for all the input, have given me some ideas I didnt even think of :)

Hope I have replied in time.

I just wanted to let you know that although apple snails (mystery snails) need a male and a female to breed the females CAN store her eggs for up to 9 months until conditions are right to climb out of the water and lay them. So if you buy one it is possible although not likely to have babies appear but they probably aren't going to overrun your tank as they don't multiply THAT fast and you can just scrape off any eggs ,if you wanted to, with a credit card and dispose of them to avoid babies. There are MANY colors and types of snails so do a bit of research before buying. Such as, if you have a planted tank you DO NOT want pomacea canaliculata as they eat LIVE plants and pomacea bridgesii will only eat dead or decaying plants so they are safe for planted tanks.

Aquabid.com has lots of neat snails for sale and there are lots of people who sell on the applesnail.net forums
There's tons of info on snails if you click >HERE<.

I would get a few more danios so they can school and a few apple snails since I love to watch them play in the air bubbles and they do this thing that may seem stange until you see it where they climb the glass to the top, then "jump" off the glass and sail down slowly (I swear they are steering their way down). Sometimes they drift into the bubble streams and can float there in mid-water for a few seconds and it seems like they are doing the equivalent of our sky-diving. We have a tall (72") tank and the snails love to float all the way down. As soon as they hit the bottom they are climbing their way back up (reminds me of my kids sledding in the winter). I bought a bunch of different colored snails from a nice lady in Texas at > this site < They shipped to Ohio and arrived alive.

Here's a pic of some of the colors:

Whatever you decide... enjoy!
