Hi all, I was pruning some of my plants today and i notice 2 small little snails creeping up and down some of the leaves. I checked again moments ago and i noticed a few new small baby snails on the glass. Is this something to be concerned about? I did a little research and some sources say that this is not a issue if those are not pond snails ?!?! All snails look the same to me ... i think.

The snails' shell is translucent in color and the 'flesh' is yellowish ... anyone know what sort of snail is this?

Thanks in advance

what shape are the shells? most common to be brouught in on plants are

ramshorn, malaysian trumpet snails, pond snails

i'll get rid of them, these things multiply fast

it depends on wether you prefer them being there or not. i have a snail infestation i have about 100, but they do a dandy job of keeping the tank clean

Hi all,

thanks for the reply. I dont mind the snails at all. I'm just afraid they multiply too fast and start munching on the leaves (java ferns).

I can't really make out the shape of the shell as they are still very tiny ... i think it looks like a translucent oval shape.

It's amazing how snails grow and multiply... just 2 days and i notice a slightly bigger snail and double the amount of snails in the aquarium.
I noticed one of them (snails) attempted to climb out from the tank :blink: when i then used a stick and dump him back in.

If it really goes out of hand, i might be buying a Yoyo loach from a LFS. But my concern is that since I'm using gravels with crushed shells as my substrate and yoyos like to dig for food, it might cause problems to the yoyo.

From what i can make of it, it is definitely not a ramshorn nor apple snails ... resemble pond snails, they have black spots on the shell and yellow flesh.

ya a cant imagine they'd be tryin to get away, dey dont go too far away from water.
id find that really excitin, wondering what species they are, checkin them everyday to look for any features that cud tell me lol
but i bot they'd be too much of a plrblem, and if they continue to muliply outta control, clown loaches help keep that problem at bay :D

Most likely, they are pond snails. Not horrible, just at bit of an eyesore when in large numbers. I regularly pick them off when I do a water change. My betta will make short work of small ones. Just out of curiosity why gravel with crushed shells? Are you trying to harden your water? Just seems off the beaten path for a Freshwater substrate.

@21rm

yeah i'm doing the same too checking on them every morning. They are nothing like apples or ramshorn or anywhere near pretty. black spots all over em.

@lijdma06

To be honest i have no idea it was recommended by my LFS. I currently have cardinals and hillstream loaches not too sure if they are ok with the condition. :(
I guess I went to the wrong store, but I'm planning to buy a bigger tank and this time around I will probably go for sand as a substrate. Bad decisions i know - sigh -

@aaronnorth

Thanks for the tip. I think the whole aquarium is messed up. I need to give away the loaches too :(
What about yoyos or clowns? You have any idea?
