hi i have loads of very small snails in my tank and crush them against the glass when i can but there seem to be loads more that i see now and again in the gravel is there any way that i can rid my tank of these snails any tips and advice is appriciated thanks joe

Just kill them as you see them. IDK of any tricks really, sorry.

ok i have been doing this anyhow thanks but im sure i read somewhere on these forums about how to attract them in to a cup or something but i cannot remember how if any 1 else knows of tips please let me know thankyou

try your lfs or ebay you can get this stuff that eliminates them quickly and it wont jarm your fish it really does work.

sink a lettuce leaf into the water overnight, in the morning they should all be stuck to the leaf.

however, i had a tank INFESTATION (i mean like infestation is not even the word, over time, the gravel was literally crawling) and i have tried every method of killing snails in my 13G - nothing worked. we even resorted to removing the fish, using a whole load of snail poison and emptying the tank and boiling the gravel. we put everything back in and, guess what... snails were back.

i learnt my lesson and now i do everything possible to try and prevent them.

ok thanks for your advice guys n gals i guess ill try these methods and hope for the best lol i think they are most probable coming from the plants which i buy from the lfs

always rinse but good luck try whatever it takes some may carry disease

Could you be overfeeding your tank as snails breed more readily when there is lots of food for them... :/

thanks guys well 1 i didnt used to wash my plants when i got them i just popped them into my tank so from now on ill rinse them in cold water and 2 i found out yesterday that i was over feeding my fish from the lfs so obviously i was doing wrong again so i should be able to sort the problem out now cheers

1 last quick question about feeding i was discussing this with the lfs and she said that in the morning give the fish some flakes and then in the evening give them 1 cube of frozen food (i was giving them 2 cubes every evening) also i give my plec 2 algae tablets every 2-3 days as the tablets are small would you say this feeding routine is fine ?

esha do a fantastic snail killing liquid called gastropex.

Hi, I know all about pesky snails. I never did find a way of getting rid. I have a new tank set up now and I am going to grab and kill every snail I see. BTW would those substances be safe for the Pleco? Because they are a scaless fish? Good luck with getting rid of those snails anyway. :)

Gastropex shouldn't be used with marines because it will kill any inverts but apart from that its fine with all trops and coldwater fish.

ok ill try the safe way first with the lettuce as i dont wish to harm my fish with chemicals thanks again and can some one please tell me if i am ok with the feeding now thanks?

im pretty sure your feeding strategy is good. I had a snail infestation when i first started and I finally just gave up and got as many as i could with the siphon when i changed the water. They eventually disapeared because i put medication in the water for a parasite that was obviously harmful to invertebrets. The lettuce trick is a good one. anchor the leaf in the evening and take it out in the morning. There are also a number of fish that eat snails but I can't think of any off the top of my head. You don't want to put any uncompatible fish in there anyways. And im not sure if crushing them and leaving them in the water to rot is the best idea. That would just create more food for the others. I always just got as many as i could off the glass with a net and threw them outside.
