Hi guys

My friends got a 4ft tank and all off a sudden she's over run with hundreds of small snails, what fish could she get to help clear them up?

just pick as many as you can out and get an assasin snail.

Since not everyone can get assissin snails, you can always cut a carrot full length put the lengths in the tank over night. The next morning the snails will be swarming all over the carrot. Lift the slice of carrot out holding a net underneath to catch any snails that release and try to escape. Then you can easily scrap the snails off the carrot (and put it back in the tank for another go at attracting more snails), and the snails that are now out of your tank you can throw on your garden (if you by doing so there is no chance the snails could make their way to a local waterway - maybe better burying the snails in the garden), if you have a composter bin put the snails in that, if you have fish you can crush the snails and feed them to the fish, its amazing how many fish love eating snails that have been squished for them.

Loaches are good at that but unless your friend is going to get a larger tank eventually don't get Clown Loaches. I had a small snail problem and I bought zebra loaches [botia striata] (I was going to buy them anyway), the snails were gone by the next day.

Buying a snail eating fish is addressing the problem & not the cause. Most snail infestations are caused by overfeeding so the first thing to do is to stop feeding your fish for a few days (they can quite happily go weeks without feeding). Baccus has suggested putting a carrot in the tank, I find a lettuce leaf to be just as effective.

Where abouts are you? I could probably send you an assassin snail if you are in the uk.
