Hello folks, I was wondering if plants make ytour tank smell, The tank is clean and so is the water I just changed the filter last night cause the old ones were knackered, and added some stress zyme and some green away. but for some reason I am getting this sort of algae plant smell coming from the tank. any Ideas on what it is and how to sort it. I haven't had this before.

Hi Chisnfips,

May I ask what you meant by 'changed the filter' do you mean you put in a whole new filter or do you mean you put in new filter sponges. Either way if you have put in completely new filter or sponges then you will end up recycling you tank. If sponges need to be changed which is only after a very long time they should be changed one at a time so as to keep one sponge in your tank that is full of bacteria and only change the other one when the new sponge is full of the bacteria.

NitrIte does have a smell about it and high rises in the tank can lead to a smell. It is a slightly musky/algae type smell - have you checked your water parameters.

I just changed one of the filter sponges, I have just been treating for white spot and I removed the carbon filter and put in the spare filter so I shouldn't need to recycle. But I haven't checked the nitrite levels yet. It smells how you described, so it could well be that.
