Smelly oscars

I have a 20 gallon with 2 small oscars the 20 gallon is temporary for about another 3 weeks give or take a week. I am doing 20 percent water changes twice a week and the tank is still horrible. It smells and is stinking up my basement. Anyone who can give me advice to eleviate the smell would be appreciated. Thanks

Bigger tank is really the best step you can take. They're great at turning food into smell, (and leaving food to turn into smell) so unless you up the water changes to daily (15% maybe, see how that goes) then it'd be tricky.


What are the water params? are they kept with anything else? What are you feeding them?

They are alone and i have noticed are very messy eaters the spit out the food almost playing with it. I feed them cichlid staple about 3 each a day they are rather large and just fit in their mouths. I plan on buying a 100-120 gallon tank in about a month.

Well, things will probably look better when you get a good tank for them. In the mean time you should buy a smaller pellet for them - having them cram their gut with oversized pellets is actually not very healthy, because the pellets are dry and absorb moisture rather then already containing the water like natural fresh foods do.

maybe add or refresh the crabon in your filter

that should help... though this setup is really a bad idea for your oscars. ah well, at least you learned something

I think u feed them way too much feed them once every two day with enought food to keep them alive until u were able to remove them from their current tank.
