One of our platies seems to have developed a small, circular white patch on his side and has started hiding (more than usual - he's generally a bit shy and nervous anyway). We've also seen him flicking against the bogwood in the tank.

The patch doesn't look fluffy and is too big to be ich - it's maybe half a centimetre across, where the tail joins the body on his left-hand side. It's been there for over 24 hours.

He doesn't look like a happy platy. He's in an 18g tank with two other platies, two adult mollies and about sixteen eight-week-old molly fry.

What is it? Do we medicate? We have some Protozin which is supposed to cure a variety of ailments including whitespot, fungus and other, but we don't have another tank we can move him to and we're worried about the effect this might have on the fry.

Any suggestions?

Does the patch look abit greyish, if you have no scaless f ish add some salt to the tank.

Thanks. Sounds like salt is the answer (only platies and mollies in the tank). How much do we add and does it have to be aquarium salt?
