My mom would like to get a small tank so she has something to look at on her desk. Any suggestions? Also any suggestions on really easy fish to take care of too.. Thanks.

perhaps a 5 gallon with some live bearers (platy molly guppie) in it. Fairly hardy fish, cheap to replace if she screws up causes the fish to die. perhaps a cory as well.

she could have a betta. i have one at work and get so many compliments on him. she would have to do water changes a few times/week, depending on the size of the tank (at least 1 gal, preferrably more) but they are pretty easy to care for otherwise!

Not a cory - they are schooling fish - and not a molly in a 5 gallon as that's to small for them, they grow to 4 inches.

I would actualy say 10 gallons would be better but if you are realy after a small 5 gallon-type tank, good options are guppies or platies (as mentioned). 3 of either or a combination but make sure you only get males as you don't want fry in such a small tank.

Another easy option would be a betta with a couple of otos or a large snail. Otos are rather fragile though and must have live algae to thrive.

4 or so endler's livebearers (only males again) would be beautiful and, being small, you could keep quite a few.

If you can find them, mosquito fish are easy and tiny but, again, they are livebearers so you may get unwanted fry if you aren't careful.

Lastly, a trio of honey gouramies (not dwarfs) would do quite well. Keep one male and 2 females as the male is territorial and will chase a single female constantly, causing serious stress. They aren't the hardiest fish but they aren't difficult either - and they are deffinately interesting and beautiful.

I've been wondering does a 5gallon tank need a heater, because there are 25watt heaters.

Yes it needs a heater if you are going tropical.

Also, don't get danios please. They are much too active for a tiny 5 gallon tank and the more common species like zebra danios need at least a 20 gallon. Plus they need to be in groups of at least 5 which would over-stock the tank. There are some very small danios you could keep but finding them can be difficult.

White cloud mountain minnows aren't quite as active but I still wouldn't put them in a small tank because they are schooling fish and need to also be in a group of at least 5.

If you want some kind of schooling fish go for very small tetras or some of the smaller rasboras that do not exceed an inch and get 5-6.

She just wants a couple fish so its not a big deal I was just thinking of a couple guppies or a couple platies.

That would be fine provided they are both males.

I would either say a trio of guppies (all male) or a betta. Either would work in a small tank. I would suggest one of those two or three gallon eclipse tanks, they work really well for desktops.
