has anyone tried doing a small planted tank?

Our 4ft Planted tank has gone and I'm missing it (the chemistry side of it if I'm honest)

on my desk I currently have a 12x8x8 'tank' with a few shrimp in it and a LOT of Java fern (didnt want to ditch it so decided the shrimp cna clean it)

It has no lighting and nowhere for me to add anything...

Does anyone know what sort of effect these 'daylight' incandessant bulb have on plants?

I figured a 60W incandesent over the tank might work...

What I am thinking of doing is setting up a mini planted tank - Just plants - small amount of co2 (I can then also see what effect it has on a small water volume)

The main problem in lighting solutions.
(oh for a small halide spot to come up in the free ads!)

Any ideas folks?

The ordinary light bulbs wont work, but i think what will work are those energy saving flourescents that fit into an ordinary light socket, a 15 watt should do you, and save money on the electricity bills at the same time.

As far as i know they work (as in a good enough spectrum) maybe somebody else can confirm.

Ive also been reading that certain types of LED lights can work also, eh i wonder who does them :D

But the energy saver is probably the simplest way to go.

Auctually maybe less than a 15 watt, i think they come in a 9 watt and that would give you 3 WPG.

who said anything about simple :D
I'm an electronics engineer - nothing I love more that living surrounded in electronic components and wires :)
I can get my hands on LEDs easily - might look at the out put of some whites i already have...

But more realisticaly, I think I'll go for the compact Floresents...

But not >>These <<ones!!
