I was just thinking about the conditions in fish stores and those overcrowded tanks. Most LFS won't bother putting in big tanks due to the costs.

I wonder if one could build a big sump, say 50g using a plastic bin, put a STRONG power head for good water areation, and some media, then have a display tank that's small, say 20g with more fish than would normally be in a 20g.

Of course the fish would have to be very peaceful to be close together like that, and it wouldn't be ideal because the fish wouldn't have as much space to swim, but it would improve conditions cheaply for a fish store, no?

Anyone have thoughts?

most fish stores i know of use a central filtration system.

I know Big Al's in MOntreal has a few filtration and you can see the pumps are probably 2000-3000 gallons for probably the same amount of water in tanks.

some tanks are running on a lone canister or power filter but generally, these are not overstocked.

I know not all stores do this, but alot of them do

Oh, I thought i had come up with something original.

LOL

one of my very good lfs has a very nicely planted display tank (i want to say 29 gallons but may have been larger) with a big rubbermaid bin (at least 21 gallon) as a sump underneath it....it is pretty heavily stocked, but with the plants there is little crowding and the water was pristine
