Well this is probably the 5th of 6th batch of Guppy fry ive had, or know of. Every batch ive ever had have never been over 10 baby gups. Ive read in lots of places with guppies and other live bearers having up to 50 fry. I dont even see how thats possible in those lil' guppies. I know a few were probably eaten but a few batches i was right on them getting them into their own net. Few weeks ago i was able to get two, and yesterday i got four.

The larger the guppy the more fry it will have it all depends on the size of the mom. If she is really small she will not have that many fry. What size tank is she in? How many fish are in the tank? What type of fish? These three ?'s play a big part in it.

well i guess all my guppy drop numbers have been normal then. :D

Another question... Ive seen it a few places in the forum, what is it with breeding traps and nets? Ive used breeding traps for my guppy fry and all of them have grown up great. Ive never lost any guppies from any nets or traps...I guess the only other way to raise them would be to put them in another tank. Just wondering whats bad with having them in breeding traps?

Thanx!

every fish I have put in a trap has died, they also can stunt your fry's growth, leading to very unhappy, and unhealthy fish.

I beleave if you are going to be serious about raising good healthy fry, long term, you need a tank for them.

I guess breeding traps work for some people.

Personally, I had one that was a plastic frame with a mesh-type net wrapped around it -- I had 2 fry get stuck between the mesh and the plastic and die because I didn't see them in time. :( That turned me against them and I chucked the darn thing right away and set up an extra 5.5 gallon (and now a 10 gallon).

I was able to have batches of 13-20+ fry without using a trap. My female was in a small birthing tank by herself and some stuff for the fry to hide in. I think young, smaller females tend to have smaller batches. If I'm not mistaken, earthwortms (chopped) and BBS fed to mom tend to increase batch size...Or something like that, I read that in a webpage I stumbled upon once in the net.

A diet of live mosquito larva also seems to help with boosting the numbers. They are easily caught in the summer time just by placing a bucket of water out in the yard and waiting a couple weeks. You then scoop them out with a fish net they look like little white or grey worms with a stinger wiggling in the water.
