Heres my story and progress from start to present for any body whos intersted.

Well late last year (2010) i decided to put a 60L tank to use that i had laying around.
It use to be the home for a Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula that i owned which unfortunately died from old age.
Anyway iv always wanted to keep fish so i set out to my local LFS with £100 in my back pocket to buy a filter and a heater also hoping they could provide my with enough information to look after them. After all how hard could it be?

I ended up buying a Fluval U2 filter and a 100W interpet heater.
I also bought 5 fancy guppies.
The LFS clerk said he wouldnt sell me the fish unless i bought a Tetra Nitrite test kit.
He said i had to leave the fish in the tank for a week and if my Nitrite test kit tested at 0, i could get another 5 fish the following weekend. So i smiled and agreed and bought the fish and test kit.

A week later and water seemed to be perfect, so i went back and bought 2 Angelfish and a Dwarf Gourami.
The week after that my water was still perfect, or so i thought, so went out and got 5 Platys.

Then of course my fish started dying one by one.

I couldnt work out why so i turned to the internet and discovered the nitrogen cycle.
I discovered i also had ammonia to worry about as well nitrites so i rushed out and bought an API master test kit.

Determined to cycle my filter and make my water safe for fish keeping, i research long and hard and found this on the internet.
Fishless cycling??!!!
So thats what i did, a fishless cycle.
And of course it was that thread how i found this forum.

The first person i ever got talking to was SKINS.
I dont know if you know him but hes a top bloke and he stayed with me all the way through my cycle answering all my questions, and i had alot lol.

My cycle ended up taking about 7 weeks!! It turned out my PH was too low for the cycle process so adding bicarb seemed to solve the problem and the tank cycled.

Anyway once i was cycled and after talking to people on here and seeing there tanks, i decided i wanted a much bigger tank  That 60L never did get stocked again.

I stumbled accross Seapets and found my tank

Fluval Vicenza 260Litre with cabinet for £500
It also came with dorset natural gravel, water conditioner, gravel syphon, 300W fluval heater, Fluval 305 filter, 2X 39W T5 lighting unit with timer, fish food, pretty much everything i needed but the fish so i snapped it up.
Here is the link if your interested.
I know £500 quid is alot of cash but it was well worth it and probably the best thing iv bought in years :D

Here it is all fresh and new

I transfered all my cycled media from my U2 to the 305 and begun fishless cycling all over again.
This time it only took 7 days :good:

This is me getting the tank ready with the plastic plants and hardscape, if you can call it that Hahahaha to think i thought this looked good.
I was totally anti real plants at this point and swore i would never go real.
Plastic is better bla bla bla

good tank
good filter
good supplier

:good:
Yea they where great i have to say. I would definately recommend seapets in a heartbeat.
Fluval also, fantastic products imo.
I almost went for the Juwel Vision 260 but didnt like the fact the filter was internal.
The Fluval was cheaper and had a external so that was my mind made up lol

Then i decided to add some more plastic crap lol to create hiding spaces and a dark background.
Its starting to look abit better but still very plain and boring.
It was about here when i added my first fish which was 6 Anglefish and 3 Pearl Gourami.
1 of the 3 gourami's ended up going back to the LFS afew days later as it turned out i bought 2 males and 1 female. Of course the male fought and chased each other all the time so 1 had to go.

The scaping still looked very bland and i knew it.
I started warming up to the idea of having afew live plants.
I knew very little about plants and growing them so i started talking to people in the planted section.
The first person i came accross was Weezawoo.
She was great and explained that i didnt need a "soil" substrate under my gravel as the plants will absorb what they need through there leaves.

She also highly recommended Java-plants.com which is where all my plants have came from since.

To start bought an....

African Tiger Lotus
Nevillii Crypt
Becketii Crypt
and 3 in 1 driftwood. Which is basically driftwood with Java fern and 2 other unkown species growing on it.

I was really pleased.
I bought Tetra Plantamin ferts at the time as this was the only fert i could find that didnt contain Nitrates and Phosphates. I was convinced back then that Nitrates and Phosphates where bad and only cause algae growth nothing more lol little did i know lol

Oh this was also around the time i got my Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Heres a pic with my first plants and dwarf neons in :hyper:

I had the plant bug now. I knew i was gonna buy more.
I also wanted to get some Julii Corys so this meant replacing the gravel with sand, so i spent another £50 on proper large grain aquarium sand from the green machine and also bought the following

Hornwort
Blyxa Japonica
Java Moss
2 Amazon Swords
Red Ivy

Replacing the sand was well worth it as i think it makes a huge difference!

Plants where building up fast so i swapped the tetra plantamin for the easylife range.
I bought the lot

Easylife Profito, Iron, Potassium, Nitrate and Phosphates

As my tank was still low tech at this stage i ony dosed Profito and iron once a week on waterchange day after the water change, and Potassium, Nitrates and Phosphates the day after once a week.
This work out nicely and seem to keep levels just right.

The Hornwork 2 weeks after planting was growing out of control. About an inch n a half a day no joke!
I thought it looked tacky and stringy so i binned it!
To make myself feel better and to fill the gap where the hornwart was, i treated myself to...

Cryptocoryne Lucens
Lilaeopsis Brasiliensis on a net
Red Ivy (again as the first lot died)
Cryptocoryne Undulata - Mother plant
and Pygmy Chain Swords

Heres how it looked

I then bought 2 Echinodorus (Rose) Mother plants to go either side of the tank, to kinda frame the tank off.

I knew by this point that i wanted to keep on going and go high tech.
I talked to Standbysetting for afew days and learnt everything i needed to know to co2 inject.

He basically said the cheapest and most effective method is the Fire Extinguisher method.
He talked me through everything that i would need and how everything works.
So i put together my co2 fire extinguisher shoppinglist

CO2 Fire extinguisher
Regulator with needle valve and solenoid
CO2 tubing
Drop Checker and 4DKH solution
Bubble counter
Glass Diffuser
and a 1600lph Hydor koralia for water movment and flow

I went on ebay, found everything i needed and clicked buy buy buy on everything lol I LOVE spending money :hyper:

nice to see the progression Slim. The photography got a lot better as well! :good:

Oh by the way the red ivy died again. I cannot grow this plant

Don't worry about it. I can't grow swords. All the swords I've ever had have gotten smaller after having them instead of bigger. I've given up. I shipped my last 2 off to wigster last week and I shan't be getting any more!

Edit: Although now Ian's said that I'm wondering too...
