I am in the process of doing a fishless cycle in the new tank and I just changed some of the water. Looking in the tank afterwards we noticed what looked like a fine film, like a very fine gossamer, attached to the side of the tank and floating in the current. Looking in the top we could see the same sort of substance along all the silicone seals. It's not a thick sludge, and it seems colourless or translucent white rather than green so I don't think it's algae (there's no sign of algae anywhere else in the tank either). Is this beneficial bacteria growing to help the fish be happy, or might it be a Lethal Killer Substance[sup]TM[/sup] that I need to deal with?

I can't tell you what it is, but I had this slime too, it all disappeared when I done my final big water change, no sign of it now.

Very common on the suction cups and wood. Have some in my tank now. It'll go away on it's on, if it is there when you get your fish after cycling, they will probably nibble at it.

Another slime post! :)

I'm now 5 weeks and 3 days into my Fish-In cycle and i've not seen any slime on anything. Maybe it's the activated carbon i'm using removing the nutrients that cause it, or my religious huge water changes - shrug.

Would this be considered common in such cases also?

Dean.

I have carbon in my filter so it can't be that. I ended up scrubbing it off with an algae magnet when I changed the water today. Most of it has either got sucked into the filter or tiny pieces cling to moss and plant leaves. It hasn't been increasing since I first spotted it so I'm not too worried.
