I have a 30 G with 2 balas in, (i know they will out grow it but im ready for that they have a home to go to when the time comes) and two sucking loaches..and thats it!!!! i would like some fish that are not small but im totally stuck for ideas!!!

oh yea and the balas keep sorta picking on each other and i dont really know what to do about it!

The only solution i can for see with the balas is removal. Like you said, u know they are gonna get too big, so it may be far better off, and farer fpr them, to remove them now, even before they get too big.

As for other tank mates, check out the 'labyrinth' fish profiles. Some gourami would go nicely in there!

Im not an expert on the subject, but a pair Dwarf chiclids, like bolivian ram, can go in a 30 gallon. But id ask around on the Dwarf chiclid idea before going ahead.

ahhh see balas removal is where i get stuck...they do have another home but parents being the 'know it alls' they are say...no wait until they get a bit bigger and im like arrrrghhh!!!!

dwarfs are too small they get pushed around too easy need somthing a bit bigger i had to remove my gourami as it was just getting knocked about because its a bit too slow....

Ok look, the balas HAVE to be removed. For a start, they need a 125 gallon tank minnimum, then there's their ridiculous activity level - they're like supersize danios - and then there's the fact that they are very nervous schooling fish and 2 isn't an adequate number. You have absolutely no choice but to remove them now. I'm sorry if I'm sounding harsh - I understand your problem - but you cannot keep these fish - especialy if you are already seeing problems - it is simply inhumane to keep them and the fish are suffering for it. Tell your parents they will die otherwise (its true) and return them. Take the 'sucking loaches' back too - these get to 10" if they are what I think (so called 'chinese algae eaters') and they become very aggressive as they grow and tend to suck on other fish - they start with the slime coat and then suck eyes out for lunch...

Once you've done that, the possibilities are endless :D I'll suggest something if you're interested...
The first idea is for a community tank with realy tiny fish so you can keep LOTS of them:
10 spotted rasboras, 6 sparkling gouramies, 5 mosquito fish (2 male, 3 female) and 7 pygmy cories.
The second suggestion is for a mixture of colorful community fish:
2 banded gouramies (colisa fasciata), 4 golden zebra loach (botia histrionica) and a school of either 6 threadfin rainbowfish OR 6 dwarf rainbowfish OR 6 harlequin rasboras OR 6-8 cardinal, rummynose or neon tetra.
My last suggestion is for an angelfish tank:
4 angels, 6 scissortails and 1 bristlenose plec.

There are plenty of other options - include a small malawi cichlid tank or a species tank of some sort or maybe a tank dedicated to a specific type of fish such as rasboras or rainbowfish or maybe you want to do a biotope tank - or you might want to go coldwater and simulate a river's powerful current with white cloud mountain minnows, hillstream loaches and some coldwater minnows or something like that...

wow i totally agree with you this post is to be shown to parents lol...

i very much like ur last idea with the angels...sounds nice..

and what are the smaller types of malawi cichlids???? ne names

Oh I didn't mean small malawi cichlids I meant a small tank for malawi cichlids :p You could keep 4 yellow labs (probably more as malawi tanks are often over-stocked to keep aggression devided as long as you have good filtration) and a bristlenose for example. :)

hehehe thanks for clearing that up!!!!

hey thanks for the help sylvia....they finnally saw the light...and the balas are gone thank god!!! they were driving me crazy..bit hard to catch thou!!! one of the bigger of the two flicked about a gallon of water over me!

I decided to do the malawi tank and bought 3 yellow labs, one about 2 inches the other 2 about 1 1/4 inch....also while i was out i bought 4 albino corys...my first ever corys yay there so cute...5 male guppys, 2 otos and 3 shrimps...and NO of corse they are not for the same tank! so i ended up spending a mini fortune hahaha! mite try getting some pics soooon....

thanks again!

That's great :) Glad to hear you went with the labs - those are lovely and very entertaining... ;)
