i've just turned the light on in my 24g (it's night here) and all i could see were snails. several large ones, and hundreds of little ones. they have cone shaped shells

now that's not a good thing at all is it?
how do i get rid of them?
how do i make sure they don't come back?

Those are Malayan Trumpet Snails.

They are actually a good snail to have. I have had hundreds in my tank for years. They only come out at night, east up dead or decaying food and plant matter and then disappear by first light by burrowing into the substrate.

You could leave them if you want with no affect to anything or if you want to get rid of them, put a peice of celery in the tank at night and then turn on the lights after a few hours. It should be covered. Scoop out and sell em on Ebay.
