Hello all, I did search for this but to no avail. Basically im a really light sleeper and am getting a 55/66 UK/US gal tank for my bed room. Now what is going to be the quiest way to filter this tank.

Thanks Andy

Which country are you in? My Eheim is absolutely dead silent. Even if I press my ear to it I struggle to hear anything.

My Eheims are silent as well. Of course, if you use spray bars above the surface or similar that'll make a noise, but that is the same for any external.

I live in North London bloozoo2, would it have to be external rather than a internal filter internal then. Could you surgest a suitiable model for my tank size

BTW I have already bought a fluval 4+ but one its flow rate is a bit on the low side (I ordered a bigger tank than i was orginally looking at) and 2 it wast slient enough.

Ah ok, UK then :) Depending on how much you have to spend, I would recommend the Eheim 2224 (the same I have) which is suitable for up to 66US gallons. This is a very good price too and I doubt very much you'll be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. The price includes postage and all filter media as far as I know.

These filters are awesome and ease of use it such a pleasure. You will also find that you don't have the weekly slog of de-gunking your internal filter. Depending on your bio-load etc. you are looking at giving the media a rinse something between every 2 - 6 months. Now if that's not fantastic I don't know :)

You could always go for Hagen which is the slightly cheaper option, but honestly for the £10 whatever you'd be saving it's not worth it.

Thanks for the quick replie bloozoo, must admit £100 is a bit on the high side, as you know its all adds up in the early stages of set up tank/substrate/lights/heater/tank stand and lets not forget the fish them selfs. I think I'm going to stick with the fluval for now and then get this beast in a month or two.

How would I introduce a new filter after cycling with out losing all that good bateria from the older one ??

Trust me - I know too well how it all adds up :( but if you think about it: the quality of your water will directly affect your fish. The lights, substrate and other nice tank mates won't. If you are thinking of somehow upgrading, and your current filter isn't quite doing the job, cut out a few nights of going out (you'll be surprised how much you spend on a night out!) and save up for that filter. (I practically sit home all the time saving up for this, that and the other  no just kidding - I have a life).

It will be a very good investment - as long as you don't decide to upgrade your tank !

If you do introduce a new filter, just hook it up and keep it running alongside the existing filter for about two weeks. You can then remove the old filter and all should be fine.
But keep an eye on your nitrites and ammonia and make sure your tank doesn't go through a mini cycle.

I put off getting an external (due to the big outlay) for ages, but now that I have it, it's bliss :)

I must admit bloo you are tempting me just to buy it and be done with it, I,ve got 5 weeks before my tank is made so ill make my desecion once its here.

Thanks for all your help
