Your tank lights should be on for between 8 - 12 hours ( less if you have no real plants ) after these hours it is best to turn lights of for the sake of the fish and to stop algae taking over your tank.
I make all my swordtails go to bed promptly at 9:00 PM and then I wake them up at 6:30 AM. They always look at me like "hey - leave us alone! We want to sleep in!". Actually I go to work at 9:00 PM and get home at 6:30 AM so they don't really have much choice!
LOL They probably look at you like --> LOL
I usually wake mine up at 6am and then they go to bed about 9pm, so I'm not too far off from yours Polar. .. Mine don't always like to wake that early either. . But I have noticed it's much easier trying to catch my mommy fishes right away in the morning before they really wake up... They don't seemed to be as stressed then
