i was just looking to find out if it is safe to use slate in any amount in my 180l tank.
its like the rock form not cut.

generaly speaking slaye in itself is inert and aquarium safe
you should avoide any green slate as this has large trace amount of copper in it (hence the green colour)
also avoid any slate that has a rusty appearance as this contains iron ore.

if it is purple it is safe.
you may wish to checkout my topic on rocks (see sig) for more safe rocks you can use.

yes blue/purple whatever you wish to call the colour is fine.

there is a blue and a purple not the same.

it all depends on where it is mined from.
as I've said the only ones to avoid are green and those with a rusty appearance.
the composition of slate can include muscovite, chlorite, kaolinite, micas, quartz and other 'accessory' minerals (there is a wide variation in composition) all of which, in the miniscule quanties that they appear in, are perfectly aquarium safe.

i just use house slate it was free, left by my builders lol looks really good, if you want to have alook at the affect of it have a look at my diary, pictures of it in my tank :D
