If this is a parasite is there a medication (US) I can use to treat the whole tank? There are ghost shrimp as well but they can be moved easily. Live plants, too.

Tank size: 50 Gallon
pH: 8.2
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 5.0
kH: N/A
gH: N/A
tank temp: 78F

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): gradually got skinnier tho eats well. Displays difficulty swimming to top. When at the top of tank, lower half hangs down more than normally. Stomach area by anal fin hangs low slightly modifying the form of the fish. Recently has begun resting under ornament breathing normally and fins spread normally when not eating.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 15 gallons every Thursday

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: gravel, live plants, rocks, API stress coat + @ water changes

Tank inhabitants: 12 Platy (2 males) 6 Platy fry (3-4 months old) 6 Ghost Shrimp

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): 1 female Platy 2 days ago. Before that it was this now sick fish and one other female bought 3 weeks ago

Just need to ask you a few questions.

Have you noticed any signs of long stringy white poo?
Check his anus to see if it's enlarged, or red and inflamed?
Check all fish to make sure there no worms sticking out the anus. (Red hair like worms)
Have you ever lost a fish to a bent spine?

Haven't seen waste from this fish since I noticed her wasting away. By the anus her body seems to be a bit distended but she is fully red and don't see it to be any more red than just her pigment of scales. No worms or symptoms noticed in any other fish. Have never had any bent spines or the like.

I have picked up API general cure and have started treatment in the tAnk. It treats parasites and something know as wasting disease which closely resembles her condition.

She is my only red fish I hope she survives and gets back to her old self *crosses fingers*

I don't know if the med you are using will be effective. But time will tell.
I would also suggest treating the fish with some medicated food.

Good Luck.

Here is some information for you on camallanus worms and treatment.

Camallanus

Symptoms:

When the fish is stationary, deep red worms can be seen protruding from the anal pore. They are only visible when the fish is still because the worms retreat into the intestine at the fishs slightest movement. Other signs may include an inflamed and enlarged anus. In severe infestations, the fish may become emaciated and spinal curvature may also occur.

Cause:

The parasitic worms Camallanus Cotti and Camallanus lacustris. These small, livebearing parasitic worms attach to the intestinal walls and rectum with pinchers. The worms grip is so tight that any attempts to remove it forcibly will rip away tissue from the intestinal wall. The worms pinching causes ischemia (reduced blood flow) to that part of the intestine. In time, the tissue to that part of the intestine will die, at which time the worm will migrate to another part of the intestine. This causes perforations throughout the intestine, which allows other pathogens to gain entry. If the fish is not treated, either the parasite or bacterial will kill the fish. Camallanus infestations occur most often in livebearing fish such as Guppies and Mollies, though infection is possible in all fish. Camallanus infestations are contagious. All fish, including those not yet showing visible symptoms, as well as the aquarium, should be treated.

Treatment:

Treat with Internal Parasite Guard, Pipzine, Disco-Worm, Trichlorfon or Fluke-Tabs as well as a medicated food to prevent a bacterial infection.

I think I agree with you. I need to put her in the filtered breeder box to see if i can see worms when she stops moving. HAve you personally had this experience or could recommend me one of those meds that you know worked for somebody?

I have had a good plot of time to examine her in a very examinable area. I do not see any swelling of her anus or any red strings or worms coming out at all. She is very skinny. She does not appear to have camallanus worms unless they havent started showing or affecting her anus yes even tho she has been getting quite skinny for the past couple of weeks. I will keep watching for inflamation and worms but will continue with this medication until I do see something.

This morning when I turn the lights on the check on my fish the little red platy wasn't hiding she was out in about even though she is still skinny and swimming slightly off. It seems as if she might be feeling a little bit better but only time will tell.

You also need to be feeding her antibiotic medicated food. It could also be bacterial, aswell as internal parasites.
Once the parasite has done the damage to the internal organs the fish won't make it. You still have to medicate the whole tank to save the rest.

I treated my guppys for camallanus worms. But the med in the UK are different to US. I used sera nematol.

Here a link to Paracide D, which can be used for camallanus worms.

How is the fish?

She seems to be doing about the same as last update, I have just now added the second half of the treatment. She is still skinny. But I worry when I look at her I can see this morphing into a curved spine situation. She looked very healthy at the petshop and she was the smallest (so i thought youngest) one. She is still swimming around and eating but you can just tell shes having a bit of a hard time and something isnt right at all. I am waiting on medication from aquabid for internal worms and parasites that is effective on camallanus just in case it could be that if I ever notice worms or something down the line. Still havent seen her poop. Still no sight of worms. She is more active, but that is just about it in terms of getting better unless it may take a few more days to respond or something idk.

Bless Her.
If the fish does have internal parasites the damage has already been done. If the spine is curved. She to far gone now to save.
You still have to medicate the tank to save the rest.

What does it look like when your other fish go to the toilet?

Today she seems to be doing even a little bit better. She is still out and about and she seems to be getting a little bit more weight now. Even her swimming seems to be correcting where she isn't tilTed down a little bit. I just got done feeding all of my fish and they all seem to have normal poop. but I did feed them flakes and freeze dried bloodworms and freeze dried brine shrimp in none of them seem to poop too much. But when I came out it was the color of the flakes and the worms and the shrimp.

but the affected red plan to you I did not see any who

Platy* not plan to you

Glad to hear the fish has made a slight improvement. Is her spine still curved?

No no spine curve. I was just saying I could see it turning in to that. Sorry I'm worried and all over the place. I did finally see her pooping. It was red and brown like all the other fish after being fed flake.
