Hi all

Just wondering? as i am planning to set up my marine tank in the bedroom, does a near silent skimmer exist? or is it possible for it to be switched off over night?

cheers

Lee

You can switch your skimmer off at night as long as there is no biological components to it, may be worth giving sleep a try with it on thought

are all skimmers run by a seperate airpump? therefore shopping for a very quiet airpump could solve the problem altogether?

hmm not quite, I've not got a great knowlege of skimmers but basically the pump mixes the water and the air together to make all the bubbles. with my skimmer it the actually sucking of air into the pump that makes the most noise. the rest of it isn't noisey at all.

Also there is a certain school of thought however that says you should turn your skimmer of for a certain period each day... :p

where about's in sheffield are you from - I'm from between sheffield and rotherham! :)

Ayup Dave, im from gleadless at the other side of sheffield, although when at the missus's im at wincobank, which is probably closer to you?

Slowly but surely getting to grips with all this saltiness! another freshwater convert in the making!

I have my skimmer in my room, its like 6 feet away from my bed, the skimmer doesn't bother me at all. I also have my 55 gal freshwater on the other side of my room. I don't think anything is loud at all. The only reason I can think of it being loud to the point of not being able to sleep is if your skimmer is vibrating against something in a strange way and makes a loud noise.

EDIT: BTW I use the Coralife Super Skimmer for up to 65 gal. I've never heard of having to turn off your skimmer each day...

ok i confess! i like the sound of the water!

ITS THE MISSUS

Well i guess its a case of try it and get used to it!!!

There are sometimes where it's accepted that you should turn the skimmer off for a while eg. if you have just fed phyto etc stop it all getting skimmed away.

But the theory (and it's one that most people have a strong opinion on one way or the other) basically is that you can 'overskim' a tank eg. remove too much foodstuff from the water column. So if you are running a huge skimmer 24/7 it's possible that some of the things in your tank will starve and you'll end up with a less diverse tank as a result.

There are documented cases of corals performing less well in a tank with a skimmer and at one point Borneman said this:

If I were asked what a solution might be, I would propose the following. Use the most efficient skimmer possible and one that is capable of maintaining high water quality when used constantly. Assuming that they do provide some amount of oxygenation, even if minimal, I would then begin shutting off the skimmer during the day for a few hours and measure tank condition visually and through testing for several weeks. If water quality is maintained, I would increase the number of hours the skimmer is off, and wait again, continuing this process until the maximum number of hours is reached where water quality and tank health remains the same without the use of the skimmer. I would also opt for daylight discontinuance since oxygen is less of a problem when photosynthesis is occurring, and since most aquarists tend to feed fish and other products like phytoplankton during the day. This way, residual foods will not be removed for at least several hours. Some aquarists may even find that they can discontinue skimmer usage entirely (I think this likely, especially if activated carbon is employed).

Understand that I'm just putting this across as a theory. While some people will tell you 'you can't overskim' and some people will say the opposite I think the reasoned answer is that it depends on your tank and what you keep in there.

I think it is best to turn it off after adding suppliments. All skimmers I have used are pretty quiet except that stupid prizm pro. :grr:
