we have 2 xp3 filters, one new and one second hand one. we need to buy new media for the second hand one, but the media for the xp3s is quite expensive (although we are prepared to pay it if needs be).

my question is regarding the spirorax biological filtration we have seen for sale on ebay. is this just as good as the bio chem stars (or any other biological filtration for that matter) designed specifically for the xp3 or are the stars better?

also is there any mechanical filtration that is just as effective as the filtration specifically for the xp3?

just looking for cheaper alternatives!! :p :*)

thanks

it probably is, but errrm...
EBAY!!??
never buy something like a filter on ebay, trust me, i spent £200 on a tank on that and it was cracked.
not ebay!

we won our rena classic 200 on ebay, it's brilliant, paid £350 for a 6ft 6 tank, that should have cost £1500 and we got about £200 worth of extras!! not a problem with any of it.. we sold the fluval 404 because we preferred to have another xp3 like the one we already had!

just need to read people's feedback before you bid on something.. that's why it's there!! if you don't like then dispute it, you are legally entitled to a refund, so you do'nt have anything to lose!! besides the stuff we are looking at is cheap, so no worries if it isn't fab!

just wanted to know what everyone thought of this siporax stuff (it is filter media, not an actual filter though)!

thanks for the reply though! :)

I personally think you should be fine. I don't see any problem putting in alternative media that's not actually the same brand as the filter.

As long as the filter works fine then bacteria will still colonise, whether it be Rena media, Fluval media, Eheim media or whatever.

maybe, ebay is great.. definatly advise using it.. just check people's feedback, as there are a lot of dodgy sellers on there, but there are also a lot of legit sellers on there. you really can get some awesome deals!

thanks for that info baldranger! will look at buying some pretty soon then! have you ever used it?

thanks again

For fish heavy keepers, an additional stage with Siporax is a real good thing. Arrange it so you have physical meedia in your extension canister, and then let the physically and biologically cleaned water run through a canister filled with Siporax.. The low O2 levels and the deep pores in Siporax make a good environment for de-nitrating anærobic bacteria, it will drop your nitrates.

sorry to sound really dumb.. but we don't quite understand what you mean lateral line.. do you mean that we should run one filter with normal xp3 media (ie the new one that has come wiht all the media needed) and the second filled only with the siporax media...?? :/

also what do you mean by an extension filter....??

sorry to be stoopid!!! :*)
