This question is actually for my neighbor...She went to the LFS for some red wag tail platys. But, the LFS had only one left. It will be about two weeks until he gets more in. She bought the one. Will it be OK without same-species tank mates for a few weeks. She doesn't want to go to other LFS because of bad luck. But she also doesn't want the fish to suffer from lonliness.

It's kind of too late if she already bought the fish. I don't see there being any problems. The Platies aren't schooling fish like Tetras.

Should she get some additional platys from another LFS (even though they are not quite as reliable) or should she just wait a couple of weeks.

Hi ya, I kept a platy on its own for about a year and it seemed fine, I then decided to get some swordtails and now I've ended up with cross platy and swordtail. Back to your question....a single platy should be fine on its own.

Sure, the Platy will be fine for a couple of weeks. I've advise her to not get the other fish the second they come into the LFS though, let them quarantine them for a while, since you don't want to introduce any diseases.

Also, make sure you stock the Platies in the right numbers. 2-3 females per male, all females, or you could possibly have all males, depending on the tank size. :)

The fish would have been on its own if it was at the shop too.....
