Hey guys,

I have a pretty good planted tank but i do know that livebearing fry like it at the top of the aquarium. Is there anything you guys hve used besides plants... to simulate somthing at the top of the water.. .like a stringy sponge or somthing like that you know what i'm talking about?

somwhere they can hide that floats on the surface.

Floating plants are your best bet if you want something on the surface. :) And not all fry hide near the surface, I've found some in my rock caves, near bogwood, below the heater...etc. As long as you have a pretty good planted tank, they should be good. But floating plants help too, makes it a little easier for them to eat without getting eaten.

Lol you just paraphrased what i said above,

I'm asking for suggestions on anything that would simulate a floating plant...

Oops, sorry! Getting late, and I wasn't reading. :* Perhaps those mops they make for Killi spawning? http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=75448

Or a fake floating plant? Live plants seems to be the best and easiest. But if you don't want that, you could always just keep the tank the way it is now. The fry should be able to figure out that they shouldn't hang around the surface too much. They aren't dumb.

A fake floating plant?

But if you want anything that looks natural and floats, there's only plants. I don't think there are rocks that float. Maybe a floating piece of wood with tiny holes in it?

Or a fake floating plant? Why don't you want live ones? I just have some duckweed in most of my community tanks, grows like a weed and I've always found fry in there when I move it around.

spawning mops, yes that would be a great idea,

i had that idea in mind, i read it somwhere but couldnt remember what it iwas all about,
i know they are used for egglayers but it would offer a very protective cover for fry aswell

If you do try that, let us know how it goes. :) I'd be interested to know, and I'm sure others would too.

How big is your tank? 'Cause you might want to try making a few, and then placing them in a few different locations. Or maybe an extra big one. :)

Edit: There's more info on making them here.

i got a 33 gallon as in sig, i found a few fry in my tank... no clue where they came from as i just got 2 guppies.. about 4 days ago but they have not given birth. So i'm not sure where these fry came from lol there are only 2 i found at th top of the surface sitting on plants....

i figured out how to make them from other sites so i'll do that and surely let you know

It's still possible the Guppies gave birth. One of the females might not have had many fry in here, so you didn't notice when she got a little thinner. Or maybe you have one of those females who only give birth to a few at a time over the course of a week or so. If it's not the Guppies...I'd have no clue as to who. :dunno:

On second thought, looking on the finished product for the Killi mop, I'd stick a few together and make it thick. The way it looks doesn't appear like it'd give the fry all that much protection.
