Simple (Not Nessecarily Beautiful) Planted Tank

Yeah they are swords, likely argentine if thats commonly sold at petco. They are in their emersed form which is why they don't look like swords. Emersed meaning they were grown out of water. Many of our aquarium plants can grow out of water. They are naturally bog or riparian plants that must adjust to changing water levels. Many produce flowers when out of the water. They change leave form/shape so the plant looks much different. Many swords grown in water have large long ribbon like leaves when taken out of the water these leaves are limp. The plants pictured have typical emersed growth of a sword with the very oval leaves with a obvious stem that's not seen on the submersed form. The leaves being much more rigid or able to support their weight out of the water is also a clear indicator of an emersed plant. Those plants will loose all those leaves, the older ones already look like they are going. They will all die back then send up new leaves of the submersed form. Emersed growth is no good under the water and vice versa.

I would never trust much of what petco says about those plants as they sell a number of terrestrial plants as aquatics... and aquatics in their 'terrestrial' form .
