Siamese - the type is Betta.

they are commonly called siamese fighting fish in LFS i never knew they were also called bettas till i joined here but betta refers to the whoe group i think including the many wild and rare species

It's really Siamese, but I call 'em Betta 'cause it's shorter & easier to say!
Plus I don't like the sound of 'fighting' it reminds me of how some people fight their Bettas.
But it's really up to personal preference what you wanna call 'em.

Like the-wolf said BOTH are correct, one is the scientific name, the other is the common name. so its purely personal preference

I've heard people call them Chinese Fighting Fish, Japanese Fighting Fish. Siamese Fighting Fish. Bettas. "Those fish that can live in the vase". "Those fish that fight each other".


But as people said above, the correct terms are:

Genus: Betta
Species: Splendens

Not unless it's properly sized. Let's call these fish Splendens.
