Will they school with my Neon Tetras?

I already have 8 Neons and wondered if the silver tips will school with them or if I need to get a group of silvers?

Hmmm, I'm not too sure about them schooling with Neons. :/ They can be fin nippers, like Zebra Danios, and I'm not too sure that the shy little Neons would take too well to that. :(

I have three Silvertips in my tank, and they school with my two Zebra Danios, and my three Serpae Tetras, mainly because they are all very quick fish and are all darting around my tank at the same time. I have no problem with any of them nipping my other fish, as they all chase each other and that gives them plenty of distraction from the other fish.

That said, Silvertips are wonderful little fish...very colorful and lively. I would highly suggest you get some, just maybe, put them seperate from the Neons.

Damn it, I was hoping to get Silver tips or Zebra Danios, I didn't think a fin nipper would go after a small Neon? I was only thinking they would be a problem for large finned fish such as Bettas?

I had silver tips with my first danios and they were fine for a few months then they turned very aggressive and even killed a penguine tetra, so I returned them to the lfs.

Thing is, fin nippers will go after anything that they can catch, not just fishes with long fins. I once tried the very setup you are talking about...I had three Zebras and a school of seven Neons, among other fish, and the Zebras would hound the poor little Neons. I rarely ever saw them, as they hid in a large cluster of plants, trying their hardest to hide from the Zebras. Eventually I had to move them to a different tank. :/

Currently, I now have a 29 gallon with Zebras and Silvertips, but they are also with Gouramis and used to be with a betta. The only reason I was able to keep them in the same tank, is because they have plenty to distract them from the slower fish.

It may still work for you, but make sure you get at least 5 or more Silvertips or Danios (whichever you decide on) to keep their focus off of the Neons, and be sure to have plenty of hiding places and plants for the Neons to get away from them if they have to. Also how big is the tank? The more room the better.

Thanks for the comments, my tank is a 20 gallon, but I'm starting to think this isn't such as good combination!

I have 6 silver tips in my planted tank. I've never noted agression with other fish other then the fact that they can be quite fast at feeding time so those that are slower might miss the food they were aiming for. They've never bothered the black phantoms, neons, danios, guppies, mollies, pristillas, white clouds, or others that I have ever noted. I would recomend them for the community tank... but keep in mind that their ability to really swim fast may bother some of the slower moving fish.

maybe you could try some other tetras to school with your neons? My glowligh tetras and neons sometimes school together and sometimes break off into separate groups, but they all get along great and the glowlights are very pretty under a light designed to bring out red colouring
