Is a small silver shark ok for a community tank containing Guppies / Neons etc.

No. Put simply.

Unless your tank is big enough to house at least 6 silver sharks and you are prepared to house them when they are all over 1ft (30cm) long and fast swimming...

Not to mention they will swallow all your guppies and neons as they grow....

But better species out there without having to keep silver sharks! They are nice fish but honestly not that exciting...

Agreed' the trouble with 'small' silver sharks, is that they don't stay small for very long!

They're also a shoaling fish and shouldn't really be kept as single specimens.

I was at a fish store a couple of days ago that had 2 tanks with silver sharks in. One was labled 'standard silver shark' the other 'small silver shark'

I thought at the time it was odd cos even I know they get HUGE ... but this query now begs the question "are lfs' selling sharks as small when there is no such thing" ...

Yes

if that's the case something needs doing about it. Bit like the other issue I've seen lately of rosy barbs being sold as cold water fish ...

Rosy Barbs are subtropical thats why. Coldwater tanks in households rarely dip below 20 Deg Celsius, 18 at lowest... which is just fine for Rosy Barbs :)

As for 'small' and 'standard' silver sharks being labled as such, i dont get what you are complaining about  if it said 'small' and the fish were a foot long... id question it... of it said adult or xl and the fish was 5cm long then id be a bit annoyed.

Shops labling fish often lable them as the whole salers list them on the stock lists. The stocklist sizers go by what they have in stock... if they have three sizes of shark in one week with the sized being 5cm, 10cm and 15cm... small medium and large but they sell all the 5cm fish and get some larger ones in... so the next week, its 10cm, 15cm and 20cm... small medium and large... but different sizes...
