Hi all,

I have recently re-stocked my 20 gallon tank and all was looking good, until i noticed this morning one of my silver sharks is covered in tiny white spots.

I have been to my lfs to get some white spot treatment and added the dosage according to instructions. In small letters towards the bottom of instructions (as though not important) it mentions that I should remove the carbon filter. Why is this? is this to allow the medication to remain cycled through the tank? Is this standard practice when adding medication?

At the moment I don't have the luxury of a quarantine tank, is there anything I should/could be doing to prevent disease spreading to my other fish.

Also, once the white spot problem has gone away (hopefully), should I buy a new carbon filter ?

Many thanks in advance

Silver sharks which is bala sharks need to be kept in groups and need to be in 125gal tank, so once you have gotten rid of the whitespot i would rehome him, so he gets a life he deserves, remove the black carbon as it will remove the med from the tank, as that what black carbon is used for.

Bump up the heat to at least 80F and add an airstone if you have not already done so.

Also, make sure you treat for 21 days. After you do the first one, do a 50% water change (using a gravel vacum is good to catch the free swimming parasite) and then re-dose. Whatever you do, don't stop treating when the sports go as this is the only time the meds work, the free swimming stage.

Upping the temp speeds up the life cycle by the way, and an airstone helps oxygenate the water.

Oh and rehoming the bala is a very good plan, once you are sure it's free of whitespot.
