i bought 2 today, around 30mm the eat everything/anything. I only bougth 2 though, as thats all the pet shop had left, i kinda took pitty on them! but yeah, theyre in my 14 gallon tank atm, which is a well planted with plenty of java fern, and many hiding places in tank.

in the tank along with the silver dollars, there are:

8 female guppies (pure albino strain-bred myself)
1 4 inch yo yo loach
2 corys
2 livebearers my neighbour gave me yet i cannot find any pics of them on net.
3 coolie loaches...babies!
and a red claw crab...Somewhere haha

basicly can any1 see any problems with my set up? and the fish their in with?

apart from the obvious they'll grow out of the tank in a few years.

get back to me!

Silver dollars need a massive tank, more length then depth prob about 3ft long. They are also a shooling fish and find security in numbers. They are peaceful and mix well in a community tank

In my experience, silver dollars are very sociable and don't cause hassle to other fishes. You will need to upgrade pretty soon, though.. Much sooner than a few years.. Probably even sooner than a few months.. Silver dollars grow pretty fast (mine went from about 1" to about 3" in 3 months) and need a lot of swimming space.

You'll also need to get hold of some more to make a group of at least 5-6, but this really won't fit into a 14g.. Another reason to upgrade soon.

One more point.. They are very aggressive eaters and may make other fish competing for food an issue (starvation) and they poo a lot, so heavy filtration, especially in a tank that size is a must.

I have mine in a 135g tank and I think this is a good size for them..

Take them back :shout: .14 gallon is basically to small for them already i'm sorry to say and by morning all your plants will be gone.Silver dollars are hungry vegetarians.

nahh a at the moment they seem fine, i'm planning on putting them in a 120 g tank as soon as they're at 3"

and i've already noticed that they're agressive eaters, and tbh they don't stop eating!

The smart thing to do is move them over to the 120gl tank now and add a minimum of 4-5 more. In a tank that is only 14gl you will be stunting the fish, meaning the fish will grow very slowly (at an un-natuaral rate) or stop growing all together but there interanal organs will continue to grow at a normal rate (very unhealthy). This is my advice that you have asked for. Good Luck

i agree. those silver dollars should be moved to the 120g as quickly as possible.

'Seem fine' but won't be.Silver dollars are very fast growing and will becoems stunted in that tank, especially with all those other fish. Also your plants will be completely eating. And yes before someone posts disagreeing that they won't eat javafern, they will.

Yup, stunting is definetely not nice.I agree move them to the 120 gallon. :good:Also just noticed in your first post you said it had many hiding places.Silver dollars really don't need 'hiding places' and would preffer an open tank to swim in. :good:

agree'd they need to be moved to a bigger tank, but it wont be unitll they're of a decent size, due too the fish in other tank be a fair big deal bigger!

about stunting of growth... i read a survey, and did an 'experiment' and stunting of growth only happens in extremely stressfull situations.

i'll start a new topic...

No, 99% of the time people don't realise there stunting their fish.
Whats in this other tank then?

If they will be eaten in the bigger tank, return them.

Cheers,

Maximus

Stunting takes time to show, it does not show in days, it show in months. And all that time you think your fish is growing nice and big it is getting stunted, every single day.Edited because it sounded like I meant stunting only happens to fish after months.

Yeah, if they're too small to go in because of tankmates, you should take them back and keep an eye out for a group of larger ones which will be okay.

You read a survey and did an experiment? well heck.. I'm sold. Was the survey by any chance written by yourself?

now guys... before we do any more bashing about stunting and whatnot, we should at least find out what's already in the big tank.

so, whatcha got in there?

If this is all the fish you currently have it your 120gl, The Silver Dollars can go in there no problem. Just make sure you add a group of at least six.
