just wondering. whats the best substrate for a planted tank do you need to add any type of aquatic soil
 
I would use only gravel no soil. is this the only way we can talk now ???

As for for substrates, it depends on what you want to grow, your budget, taste etc.

Plain gravel will work but plants with roots generally do better with a nutrient-rich substrate.

There are two main methods. A complete substrate i.e. Seachem Flourite or Caribsea Ecocomplete. Or substrate additives i.e. Tropica Plant Substrate, laterite or root tabs. The latter is the cheapest and can be used to target individual plants.

Aquatic soil can be used as a base layer, like most substrate additives. It is cheaper and can be very effective.
