?? Currently in a debate of sorts with dear friends... :p

So is it platy with a long 'a' sound - like plate -y.... or sort 'a' sound like splat -y ...

To me - it should be platty if rhyming with splat... ;)

Curious to see your responses!

i agree with you. i pronounce platy with short a like splat would be. i hope thats it, if not i've been pronouncing it wrong along with my entire family since we knew what they were. :D

platty as in splatty!!!
but that doesnt mean im right i did used to call cichlids 'chill lids' untill i was educated on this forum that it should be pronounced 'sick lids'

Play-tey is how it's always been pronounced around here, and how I have always pronounced it. It only has one 'T' and it seems if the proper way to pronounce it rhymes with splat, it should have two...

it's funny...i've always pronounced it platy like splat...but its same with goodeids when i first read about them on here i pronounced it like "goo"deids but then when i heard someone say it they say it like "ga"deids...if that makes any sense at all :D

Yep - I've always pronounced it as in "plattie / Splatty"

Actually - why is it called "platy" in the first place ?

Yes! This is what I was trying to say actually.. I had always thought it was play-teee. Guess that wasn't clear. Maybe the splatty platy is a UK pronunciation? ;) Interesting responses! Maybe this should have been a poll.

i'm in the US and pronounce it like "splat". maybe just a regional thing depending on where your from. i live in the northeast US, NY to be specific. maybe it is diferent in different parts of the country or world. like accents (sp?).

I live in the Northeast too. ;) I've lived in California and New Mexico too, and everyone where I've been pronounces it like it's spelled. :dunno: I guess it's the Bet-ta/Bay-ta thing of the Livebearer world.

yea i have just recently pronounced betta as bet-ta, i used to call it bay-ta and still do most of the time. its a hard habit to kick
