I have a 55gal. I have an Ehiem Ecco 30 canister with an Ehiem Liberty 130 Hang-on filter. I have 3 black skirts, 2 Head-tail light,2 Angels, 2 guppies(and 2 babies), 1 betta, one Raphael Cat, 1 fatuella, and 1 Siamensis. What would be the added maintenance with live plants and what would the benefits be?

The main bonuses I always think of by having live plants over fake is that the live plants can provide food for the fish while using up fish waste/ nutrients. Plus the bonus of live plants is that they grow and as they grow you can rescape and rearrange them in your tank or add them to more of your tanks without extra expense of having to buy more fake plants all the time.

If you keep your planted set up simple and use easy to grow plants than the only extra maintenace they will require is trimming if they start getting too long or leggy and removing any dead leaves, and suitable light to enable healthy plant growth. If you want to go to extremes you can add cO2 difusers and have weekly fertilizer dosing but I have never bothered with all the high tech plant growth stuff and just enjoy seeing my plants swaying in the currents from the filter return.
