I thought I'd treat my new (2nd hand) tank to a new load of silicone sealer once i'd cleaned it. I've made a right mess of it!!!

I might even have to take the whole lot off again and redo it, has anyone got any tips?

Cheers,

Steve.

Steve, if the tank wasn't leaking in the first place, all you would have to do is run a very small bead just for insurance. A razor blade is the time honored method to clean up mistakes. And practice makes perfect... :)

Before you do the sealing, be sure to use de-natured alchoohol to degrease the work area.
If you do not... it will probebly leak!
One trick you can try is; take a square piece of plastic and round one corner. The rounding should match the same arc of the silicone that you want to stay in the joint. when you run the silicone try to do it in one sweep. Then use the plastic and run it up the new joint, this will press the silicone in to the glass a little, give it a curved shape and remove any excess.
Wait until the silicone dries before trying to removing the rest of the stray silicone.

Good luck!

can also use white vinegar to clean off the excess silicone. one you scrape the old silicone off use the white vinegar to remove any residue left over by the old stuff. will get a much better seal like that. make sure that you use it in a well ventilated area and was the tank out well with hot water after.
