I have bought some backing which needs to go on the inside of the tank. Do I basically want "non-toxic, animal friendly" sealant. I don't have to buy "aquarium sealant" or something.

dont use anything with anti-mould in it as it can leach and affect the fish in the long term.

I would stick to aquarium glue

Not sure if it's available to you - but GE silicon works out nicely - the less additives the better - i've used it to patch up a filter and some other stuff - works well enough for several months with no adverse results... sometimes your LFS will carry it too - u pay about 20% more than a tube of the "normal" stuff - but if you're really worried - it's an extra couple of $$ max...

If you want to be on the safe side and you've only got a backing to to I would buy aquarium silicon. If you had a huge tank to build then it might be worth looking for alternatives.
