Hiya chaps,

So for my birthday recently Jay bought me a Nikon D5000 that came with the "standard" 18-55mm f/3.5 - 5.6G VR lens.

This is a nice little thing leaning towards the macro end of things, however, I've already found myself trying to push it beyond it's close up limits and therefore finding my results a bit disappointing. In terms of range, I can take nice scene snapshots, but I am also desperate for some telephoto action!

Today I tested out a friends Sigma 70-300 f/4 - 56 APO DG lens;

this strange piece of kit is meant to have telephoto and macro capability... jack of all trades etc.
It has a nice telephoto ability at relatively close range, if I was to buy a telephoto I'd want something that could snap birds off in the distance, is this likely to be achieveable without breaking the bank?
As for it's macro capabilities, totally non-existant, just awful.

So basically, you chaps who are in the know, do you have any suggestions for a relative noob like me?
I'm looking at the Sigma 105mm as a macro lens choice;

but I'm not sure on a telephoto option?

Cheers!!!!

sigma 105mm is supposed to be a good macro lens, ( on my hit list) not a lot of difference to the nikon article in terms of cost tho IIRC.

for birds I use a sigma 50-500hsm with/without a 1.4 teleconverter, works well & available sub £600, but a heavy beast & you wont want to use it handheld for any length of time.

That Sigma would be fine for a macro lens.

regarding a tele, I was going to suggest the Sigma 50-500 too. Do you have a budget? According to the Warehouse Express website, its just over £1000, which may break the bank.

Unfortunately, theres always going to be a compromise, unless you spend thousands. Specifying a budget would help pick out a few tele lenses.

If that isn't good enough check out some IN FLIGHT shots of dragonflies with a tele-converter! This lens is very capable in good hands :nod:

Saying that, it is a little soft above 200mm, and does not compare against the 55-200 I think this lens could produce an equal image even when cropped to equivalent of 300mm.

Just to add the 105 a nice lens, go to WAB forums to see what the insect snappers agree on there they are the ones to ask regards makro!

Also a shot of a bird I did with my Sigma 55-200. I have not been able to perform a fare test with my 70-300 yet (purchased s/h to replace 55-200) because some of the iris lubricant has contaminated one of the internal elements :ninja:
