i have been getting some algae in my moderately planted tank. it looks like little hairs and doesnt grow very long and is bright green. i also get bright green spots on my glass. i tend to leave the light on a lot and i have heard of people turning the light off for about two hours to reduce algae. does that work? will it affect my plants? i was doing about 12-14 hours but i am definitely going to start cutting down on that and try the break in the middle of the day.

Some people suggest it does work however I would suggest that is pure placebo effect.

Many people seem to seperate algae from plants however they are both plants. Any change that affects plants will affect algae quicker. Algae will react to changes quicker too.

The idea of the Siesta is to have a period where the CO2 can build up again. It is used purely with yeast setups in the main. Any other reason you hear is purely artistic licence.

So you may see some effects. Not likely to be because of any midday break though. You need to cut your hours down considerably. too long for a planted tank even if it was in perfect balance.
