 My Lion-Head fishy is very active, but today I have noticed when he swims to the bottom of his tank,he then does side stroke across the front of his tank then goes back to the top.He doesn't do this continuously just in fits and bursts???????

Is there something wrong with him or is he just doing a 'swim past' and showing off

I have a mad fantail that tends to go in for the odd "funny five minutes" - even upside down! but I would suspect a swim bladder problem. There are plenty of good swim bladder remedies in the lfs but I can't personally recommend one. What do others think?

:hyper: Will a swim bladder problem cause distress for my fish.Last time I treated a fish of mine I was given the wrong treatment from lfs and it finished off the fish.Is there any way the swim bladder can be rectified if not treated . Please advise as I don't want to loose him

 Can't find anything, anymore suggestions

Yes my suggestion is if its swimming normally at all other times its probably ok, I have one that does exactly the same, and it definately 'aint got a swim bladder problem.

I feed all my fancy fish on fresh food when I can but sinking food other times..never flake..they gulp air and if they have got swim bladder it makes it worse. I had a fish with swim bladder survive for years with careful feeding.

Try feeding the fish with live daphnia - it has helped with my fish in the past. If you normally feed dried flakes try breaking the flakes up in an egg cup first get a small amount of water from the tank, slosh it round a couple of times so that the flakes all sink to the bottom of the cup and then tip it into the tank. My fish no longer feed at the surface and none of them have had swim bladder since. I usually feed them flakes and the occasional treat of live daphnia and blood worms.

Swim bladder disorders in goldfish are most commonly caused by genetic problems because of the way they are bred, fish flakes can lead to constipation in any fish and constipation can cause swim bladder disorders, the best way to treat a contipation related swimbladder disorder is to cut down on dry or high protein foods and instead feed lots of veg based foods like algae wafers, peas, cucumber etc  .
The other cause for swimbladder disorders is internal bacterial infections, in which case, an appropriate med is the best form of treatment.
