Hi
I am new to this site but I need some help. I have a 10 gallon tank that has been set up for 2 months now. It originally had 3 tiger barbs, 1 male betta and 1 male gourami. The betta was getting fin nipped a lot and I read that adding more tiger barbs might help. So i bought 3 more green tiger barbs. and also a pleco as the original one died. Everything was fine until a few days ago. I found one of the new barbs dead and the others are acting strange. they are swimming against the decor eratically and the 2 green barbs are head standing a lot. they also seem to be breathing a lot (mouths are always moving) and they are spending a lot of time at the top ofthe tank. they usually would all be clustered together but are now mostly seperated and staying still in one place. my betta is also more inactive than usual, I have a ship in the tank which provides a hiding place and he is always in there laying on the ground. he'll only really come out to eat. the gourami and pleco seem to be okay. From reading information online it seems that they could have a number of different things wrong with them. im assuming it was caused by adding the new fish. im thinking it might be velvet fish disease or maybe ammonia poisoning. however i recently checked the ammonia and nitrate levels and they were both 0-low. the ph is 7.6 which has risen since the last time i checked. i keep the temperature at 25 degrees celsius. I am located in a small town so Im not sureif our small pet supply store will have medicaton and im not sure what to do. I dont want to mistreat them for something but I also dont want them to die. please help!

since my fish tank is over stocked, i've decided to move the 5 barbs to a seperate 20 gallon tank. im hoping that if they are less stressed they wont stay sick. im treating them for ich/velvet and im hoping that the gourami and betta as well as the pleco will be fine in the ten gallon until i can get another tank for the betta.

Hiya,

I got some barbs (green and tiger)

They were in quarantine when i saw them at a lfs

I obviously was after barbs, so with a friend of mine who sometimes helps nursing large ill fish for them (he is fish mad and has massive tanks allover his place lol) they said asap quarantine was up i could have first dibs, welll .......................

I lost one after two days, then another one i think another two days later

Having had ich for the first time months ago i didn't quite think they had the ich symptoms

I went with a swimbladder treatment, worked great, other barbs that seemed weak none-feeding and swimming eraticly picked up over a matter of days and are now swimming in groups and well fed :)

Though your details tend to pinpoint to ich keep swimbladder problems in mind just in case

Hope all goes well :)

are you testing with strips or liquid test kit
also how many fish do you have in the tank all together

low on o2

they r tired as they head stand when they rest.

ps.. tiger barbs r not green barbs.

min... 7 TIGER barbs.. or its cruel.

Hiya's,

Got 9 green tiger barbs and 9 tiger barbs, all these as i say are fine now after treatment

Really add a nice movement to the tank when they scoot across the front

Tell you which fish have us both amazed at their colours and value for comedy, harlequin razzers, these are great for starting a wave off around the tank anytime of the day

As said though, the barbs are communal fish and more the merrier

Any news on how the fish are doing ??

well I was able to find a new home for the barbs, in a friends 20 gallon tank. theres only 2 tigers n i green left but theyre all doing well now. I still have mt dwarf gourami and betta in the 10 gallon but i just bought a new tank (25g) so once its set up and cycled im putting my DG in there and adding some cory catfish and guppies i think. my betta will have the 10g all to himself unless i find a couple compatible tank makes for him too. im hoping allthe rest of the fish pull through, but the barbs have been in the new tank for 4 days now and theyre still alive so im thinking thats a good sign.
