One of the tetras in my 30 gallon looks like it's getting sick. I see a whitish pink spot forming on it's side and it's starting to stick out a tiny bit.

Is this septicimia? Ulcers from septicimia maybe? I have some Maracyn, Maracyn II, Miracide, and Jungle Clear. Looks like Maracyn II is for septicimia. Should I put him in that?

Can I use a 3 gallon jar with an airstone? He's very small.

I don't have a hospital tank. I do have a 6 gallon with my betta female but I would rather not have to move her.

Please let me know. I need to get him out of there before he infects any other fish!

Ok, found a pic that looks just like it. Says it's columnaris.

Still need the question answered about using a 3 gallon for his hospital tank.

How much should I worry about my other fish being infected?

I take it that the 3gallon is not cycled, so how often do you clean it out/do water changes? what type of tetra is it? If nitrites have started to build up in the tank they can very often bring on columnaris and keeping the water clean as posible is one of your best chances of keeping him alive, meds depend on any other info you can give on his condition and wether he is with any other tetras/tank mates etc.

I have successfully treated columnaris with a combo of 4 things: Maracyn, oodles of Stress Coat, lowered temp, and sparkly clean water. The 3 gallon tank would be perfectly fine with an airstone in it - just keep an eye on him. Temp should be in the very low 70's for that illness.

Thanks everyone.
The tetra is in a 3 gallon (giant clear glass cookie jar), with meds and some hiding spots. I took some gravel from his tank as well as water. I added an airstone. I added a bit of new water with stresscoat. Room temp is usually in the low 70's so things should be good.
He seemed a bit freaked out at first but he looks at ease now. In fact, he seems to really like it. He and the betta that I put him next to seem to be making friends.
The tetra is probably just looking longingly into the larger tank but the two seem to be sitting next to each other all day.

Tokis.....This tank is a 30 gallon that my neighbor gave to me fully stocked (you might have seen me post other questions about it). I've had it almost 3 weeks now.
The people who gave it to me had the tank for "less than a year" they said. I don't know exactly how much less. They never did a gravel cleaning or water change. They only added water as it evaporated. I'm surprised that the tank looked so clean but I'm sure the water condition was horrendous.
So far I've done three 30% water changes (about 1 week apart) along with a few gallons changed every day (I try to do it every day, I've skipped a few days here and there though). There was pure black silt coming up from the gravel at the first change! It looks great now.
I did get a test kit. Unfortunately it doesn't have the ammonia test on the strip. I need to go get one but haven't had the chance.
I don't think there really is anything more I can safely do anyway. It's probably not good for me to do more than 30% changes every 5 days or so, along with about 3 gallons daily. As it is the water must be in far better condition than it's been in a long while.
Since the last water change the nitrites are down to zero (they were high still even after the second water change). Unfortunately I can't get the nitrates down below about 80 still. The water out of the tap is testing 0 so it's definitely from the tank. I have to get an ammonia test so I can keep an eye on that.
