my plec was upside down in the tank last night in the corner. managed to get him right way up but he is struggling to swim. his tail looks bent to the side. still eating and fins up. any advice would be useful

what are your tank stats?

Ammonia, Nitrate Nitrite PH etc?

What type of plec is it, how big and what sized tank?

It doesn't sound good to be honest...

dont know the tank stats. the plec in question looks like the first photo you have shown. plec still at bottom of tank and when he tries to move flops onto his side and struggles to get up. occasionally looks as though he has hiccups. Have had him since sept and hes been fine. have not introduced anything into tank but found a loach dead this morning

forgot to mention, plec about 2 to 2.5inches, tank only small about 12" by12" by 12". Have 5 neon tetras and 6 other small fish

Invest in a liquid master kit of your own.
Take a sample of your tank water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.
Once plecs are upside down they never make it.
The tail can bend if the plecs is bloated up.
Any sores on the belly or underneath the belly region.
Is the plec laboured breathing.

plec looks very ill today. not breathing well and has been upside down all day so far. no sores, no bloating of stomach or concave appearance. bought test kit, nitrate level off scale, very high and water quite hard. really hope he pulls through but not convinced he will. all other fish still ok

do some water changes - say 50% first one then a few smaller ones a few hours apart to bring the nitrates down...

What is the ammonia and nitrites like?
