hi guys,

i have a small 28L tank but it is 5 months old now so i reckon its pretty established. all my stats are good- ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 30. pH7.2.

i had some cardinals that had a fungus on one of them so i treated them and after taking advise from this forum, gave them to a friend with a bigger tank.

so i now have ...

2 yoyo loach, 2 platys and a shrimp.

the female platy (my first fish) seems sick. she lies on the bottom on her side and appears to be breathing heavily. then will swim up to the surface for a bit then be ok again, then lye on the bottom for a while again.

there are no obvious symptoms and she doesnt appear pregnant.

i treated the fungus again in case it is still there but there seems to be no change. she has acted like this for nearly 2 weeks.

my filter is oversized for the tank and turns over 300l/hour. i also use an airstone on overnight. all other fish seem ok.

please please help, shes my first fish!

thanks in advance,

jim

id say swim bladder...... i wouldnt think the current would be too strong. platties are strong swimmers.
i wish i could be more of help to you.
regards, communtiy

hi.. im no expert but one of my mollies got a swim bladder infection after recovering from a fungal infection, i used interpet swim bladder treatment, as mine was balancing on his nose, and side, took 2 treatments of it but it worked.

does she look pregnant?
id say swim bladder also, its quite common, but i think unless treated early it is often fatal.

I have had a female platy do exactly the same thing and i am sorry to say that she didnt make it. I does sound like swim bladder. There is a good section in the beginners rescource section on here about euthenasia. Sorry if that sounds awfull, but i had to sit and watch my platy do that for a while and its awfull. I hope she pulls through for you. Best of luck. GRJ :(

thanks guys,

i will speak to my lfs store to see if there is anything to treat it. if not i may look at other options.

not sure what i would do without this forum.?!

thanks again for the help. i will post the outcome on here one way or another.

jim
