Sick Platy In Upgraded Tank

Don't know what they are, put a net over the growth things on the bogwood and remove it and sterlise both peices in boling salty water, rinse well, let dry out for a day.

Rinse well with dechlorinated tap water or tank water? I plan to get some wormer plus to treat the 'survivors' for worms

Rinse well in tap water, but let the bogwood completely dry out before you add it back to the tank.
Good luck with the fish.

Thanks for all your help Wilder. Let's hope the rest of the fish survive

If you had a mature tank just striping it down and sterlising everything.
But not if you heven't got another tank as the cycle would kill fish more.
I stripped mine down but I had a goldfish tank I could take benefical bacteria from.

This is going to sound awful I would end his misery, can't save him gone to far now.
Get a bucket of very cold water add some ice cubes, place the fish in the water takes about 20 seconds, leave the fish for a while just to make sure its passed on, sorry, been here myself not nice.

You are not kidding thats awful, how would you like to be frozen to death.....................?

If you need to put a fish down do NOT use wilders method for obvious reasons.

Buy some clove oil from a chemist and add 10 drops per liter of water in a large tub (or if like me chuck a load in) and put the fish in that, that will put it to sleep and then kill it depending on the size of the fish, if its a large fish its best to severe the spinal cord as well to make sure.

And just so you know, wormer plus is the same as Flubenol 15. Levamisole and metro are not approved for aquatic use in the uk, so thats illegal and the VMD are looking to clamp down on this

Its not frozen to death it quick and i;ve done it, found it to be the best method.

This is what I choose to do with my fish and my comments are only placed here as opinion. This is a heated topic. I choose based on my knowledge from my training:

Oil of cloves is a topical anethestic and was used in the past to treat toothaches. Lidocaine (like at the dentist's office is a topical anesthetic as well). When we operate on people we really want to achieve 2 things, analgesia and anesthesia, that is, relief of pain and unconsciousness. IMO, when a fish is immersed in oil of cloves, it is essentially 'topically anesthetized', paralyzed, but, I am NOT convinced that the fish is unconscious.....none of us will really know for sure. We don't know if the oil of cloves causes stinging to the mucus membranes, eyes, etc on initial contact nor if the fish is motionless, painless but aware.

Extreme cold is an anesthetic. When applied to skin, you can actually cut the skin and feel no pain. Cold also can cause rapid unconsciousness. In fact, hypothermia is reported to cause a state of euphoria and clouding of consciousness. Fish, at least most of the types that we keep (tropical), are extremely small and rapid immersion in extreme cold water, in my opinion, causes rapid pain relief and rapid unconsciousness. I have never seen any of my fish shows signs of what I consider suffering. They stop moving immediately and appear lifeless. Some have stated that since fish are ectothermic, this doesn't apply....perhaps in cold water fish I would agree.

I choose to euthanize my fish this way, rather than oil of cloves. One must either make an educated decision for themselves, or, choose what is currently accepted by the masses as what is humane.

Added: although I would never use blunt force to euthanize my fish, nor advocate it, one fact is for sure: death is instantaneous

Of course extreme cold is an anesthetic, but it doesnt half hurt getting cold enough to have your hands and feet go numb enough to get to that stage.

To be honest, I dont care if that was written by a mod, god, admin or a beginner, I think its wrong and I know it is, freezing anything to death is not a nice way to die

There is no nice way to die.
I wish my mum died in 20 seconds than watching her die of cancer it was a nightmare.

whats your mum got to do with a fish??

freezing to death and dying of cancer are both horrible and wouldnt wish either on my worst enemy

Not getting into an argument paul.
Everybody has different views you are entitled to yours, but cutting a head of a fish is not for everyone.
We try to look at best methods to make it less stressful ordeal for the fish.
